**August 2014 Update**: I'm cautiously taking my review back from one to three stars. I'm playing BF4 again via EA Access (which is the way I would recommend anyway, $5 is certainly worth a one month trial, if you don't want to pony up for a $30/year). So far many of the bugs I noticed before are gone, but I still need to take it through its paces with friends.

Very disappointed in BF4. I'm a big fan, but I just can't sit by as EA and DICE release what feels like the buggiest Battlefield ever shipped. The graphics on Xbox One are very nice and this game truly feels next gen, but I experienced in just a few hours of playing: audio dropouts, quick match not connecting me to the right servers, frequently servers would pop up and request another $50 for premium upgrade, getting kicked out of servers, crashing back to the home (only X1 game I'm having this problem with) and a complete lack of any functionality to group up in a party/squad pre-game. I'd love to be playing BF4 right now, but the reason I get it is for multiplayer gaming with friends an it is absolutely unfit and broken for that purpose.

BF3 had its problems too, and is running pretty good now...so I'm hopeful that maybe they will fix it and I'll just buy the premium version next year (I went ahead and traded away BF4 for $40 since its essentially unplayable for me). Although its pretty frustrating how ripped off I feel (I should have gotten a full refund).

Oh well, back to BF3 Premium for now. At least it works, though its a bummer having to play on 360 (instead of One).

1.0 out of 5 stars A broken buggy mess December 2, 2013
Platform for Display:Xbox One|Edition:Standard
This game barely works. When it does, it's awesome. The problem is that I spend more time trying to get into servers than I do playing. When I do make it into a random server, there is a good chance the game will crash to the dashboard before I can complete a map.

So frustrating - do not buy right now. Wait a while until they fix this mess, if they ever do.

Edit - I am sitting on my couch trying to get multiplayer to work for the last 45 minutes or so. No luck - maybe I should continue my single player campaign? NOPE! For the second time, all my campaign progress has been deleted. I cannot stand to play the first 60% of this game for the third time. The fun I've had with this game has been greatly overshadowed by the unreal frustration I've felt with it.

This is my only XBox One game too - now I've essentially got a $550 netflix machine.

Wow. That's all I have to say.

This game is AMAZING...when it works, which is roughly 15% of the time.

The single player does not work as it erases all progress randomly not matter what platform you play.

The multiplayer is broken because it takes ~10 attempts to get in a match because "Can't connect to server" and other error messages.

I think it's criminal that this company will make money on a game that for all intents and purposes just isn't finished, and it's not like you can return it.

Again, if they ever issue patches this WILL BE the FPS to have, but until then it is a complete frustration.

1.0 out of 5 stars DICE/EA - Your Game Sucks December 2, 2013
By M.D.

Awesome game... when it works, which is about 33% of the time now. Shame on DICE/EA/whoever for launching such a half-baked game. I can't believe I paid $60 for it, then paid another $50 for premium... yeah, I know, there's a term for that... BOHICA.

I spend more time trying to connect to a multiplayer game, then actually playing one. Sometimes, it puts me in the room for the incorrect game mode. Then, when the DICE/EA Gods finally deem me worthy enough to put me in a Conquest or Domination game, it crashes midway and I get booted out to the Xbone home screen. A little bit of advice for the DICE/EA junior developers - if you guys are expecting this twitchy behavior, then how about throwing us a bone and providing more info/status when we're trying to connect to a game or why we're unexpectedly booted out of one? So we're not left in the dark wondering why the Conquest and Domination Nazis forbid us from playing (no Conquest for you!).

It makes me wonder if the same guys also did the Obamacare website. Call of Duty is on my ban list for lag, now Battlefield 4 may be the last Battlefield I buy. This lack of QA is intolerable and should not be rewarded.

UPDATE 07-DEC - Good grief, the game works 0% of the time now. The game no longer launches/loads and I get booted out to the home screen 100% of the time now. Whatever update they published out last night made things worst for me. I hope uninstalling and re-installing the game will fix it. I wish I could rate it 0 stars.

UPDATE 09-DEC - After uninstalling, then re-installing the game and add-ons, it still wouldn't load. After contemplating taking my $110 disc to the range for target practice, I power-cycled my Xbone, and now all is back to normal, where normal is the game working 33% of the time.

This review is one of sadness and regret.

This game could have been my top pick for FPS. The game play is engaging, unique, fun, and addictive. The destructible environment really adds another dimension to the game.

The sad thing is that there are game-crippling bugs that render both the multiplayer and single-player campaign unplayable on the XBOX-One. Let me first say that I am VERY forgiving and tolerant of game launch issues - I understand that a huge demand creates issues that are unique and not easy to fix. I work in IT, and I am always an early adopter of products and games. Grand Theft Auto 5 had similar launch issues when the multi-player was released, and still I gave it a very positive review.

THIS mess, on the other hand, deserves to put EA out of business. This game was launched almost two months ago, and it is STILL unplayable, with no end in sight.

Some of the "game crippling" defects I've encountered:
* All campaign progress just disappearing completely - hours of playtime lost here
* About 50% of the time, attempts to quick-join any kind of mutiplayer game results in being kicked back to the main screen.
* The other 50% of the time, the attempt to join a multi-player game results in joining a game of a different type (for example, you choose CONQUEST mode, but it puts you into a team deathmatch mode)

So, now, I'm sitting here, a month later, with the same issues (actually, the issues have become more severe). The EA games support department is an absolute joke. Even though my issues match the issues that everyone else on the internet are complaining about, they still had me run through all of the general XBOX troubleshooting steps, as if they've never heard of any of these issues.
