Pros:

Excellent shooting sound: it really sounds cool when you're shooting, I would sayd one of the most real sound on a FPS.
Destroy everything: that's fun! Finally a game in which you can send your enemies to hell withous having to shoot them directly.

DICE Sweden has produced one amazing engine. They already have mastered the gameplay in past games. The new frostbite engine is as good as it gets for FPS. After playing for a couple of hours, it is impossible to play other FPS like COD4. Why bother to climb up to take down the sniper, when you can take down the tower with a RPG. There is no annoying boundaries, every thing can be opened up. When the map is not rigid it is lot more fun to play.

It is easy for anyone appreciate the video quality. Iam more amazed by the engines audio strength. Every gun, explosion, terrain sounds unique. Even the sound transition of passing vehicles in combat is reproduced impeccably.

The game is very accessible too. With lot of respawn points, it is easy to get along when you make a mistake.

I like the witty British/Swedish writing. Story line and the twist is very well handled. This game will be a strong contender for FPS of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is A Really Fun Game., June 26, 2008

This review is from: Battlefield: Bad Company (Video Game)
Battlefield: Bad Company is a fun game to play. Right away I noticed the game has probably the best sounds of combat I have ever heard in a game. From the sounds of weapons firing to the sounds of armored vehicles running, the game is great to listen to. The sounds of mortar shells coming down and exploding around you is just unbelievable. When I walk through forests and fields, I can actually hear the sounds of birds chirping, dogs barking, and cows mooing.

The graphics in the game are just great too. I love looking at the water in streams and rivers. It looks very real. The forests and villages in this Eastern European setting are really beautiful to look at in this game.

I like how you can jump in different vehicles to drive around in and there is a car radio in the vehicle to listen to while you are driving around. There are several different radio stations to listen to. I love the music in this game.

The AI in this game is pretty smart. When enemy soldiers see me, they immediately run and hide behind something. They have try to out flank me and they have tried to sneaked behind me a few times. I love the part where a enemy soldier runs into a building to hide from you and you can use your weapon to blow a good size hole into a building to waste the enemy soldier. It is also so much fun to just take your weapon and shoot down all the trees that enemy soldiers are hiding behind. You can do so much damage to the terrain with your weapons in this game.

The maps to this game are huge. The maps are ten times bigger than the maps to Call of Duty 4. I love the sandbox settings to this game where you can go any where on the maps.

I highly recommend getting this game. Battlefield: Bad Company is a fun game to play and the game has a lot of replay value to it.

I heard this was going to be great, so I got it right away. I'm pleased to report it is as fantastic as people expected. You can destroy everything in your sight! You can drive tanks and jeeps and helicopters, everything. The online mode is smooth and easy compared to MGS4. Makes COD4 seem dumb for not having rumble, destructible environments or vehicles. There's going to be a lot of action on the Bad Co servers this summer! Get in on it!

01/01/09: I have to say, I have gotten a bunch of games since this one, and I had a lot before I got this one. I have 11 or 12 games for PS3. Hands down, this is still my favorite game and I highly recommend it at this new low price. This is the BEST game for PS3 and you must have it. Do not hesitate. You couldn't spend $30 towards your system and get more for the money! I still have not played the actual game portion of this. I play ranked quickmatches and that's so satisfying I haven't even tried the story. Also, they added a capture the flag type multiplayer version to it and I haven't even tried that! The ranked quickmatch is worth the money alone. This game is awesome. Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars BBC - Finally a contender for Game of the Year, June 27, 2008

This review is from: Battlefield: Bad Company (Video Game)
Comparing BBC and COD4 is closer to apples and oranges, but because they are both military shooters, they will be compared constantly. The truth is, they are both great games.

Here is my take on Battlefield Bad Company:
BBC has a great use of vehicles, they fit the battlefield well, are not too powerful and are fun to operate. The only one that doesn't work well for most people is the chopper - it takes forever to master.

All of the classes are fun to use. The sniper in COD4 is frustrating and on some boards is just about impossible to use. BBC makes sniping fun again.

The single player game is awesome in a completely different way than COD4. It is laugh out loud funny and simply a blast to play, blowing everything in sight up without constantly worrying about how much ammo you have. It is much more fun than realistic.

BBC Multiplayer places a greater emphasis on teamwork. It may sound silly, but the support role, the dependance upon others for a ride to the fight, and how the roles mesh together make for a much more rewarding experience when it clicks. If however you are thrown in with a bunch of newbies who don't know how to play in a team, it can be frustrating. Once I was on a team of 12 and I counted 7 snipers on one board. No one was attacking the crates. But as people start to get the feel for it, it gets more and more fun. I actually listen for the support guys to yell, "Here, patch yourself up!" and start looking around for the kit. Also, I have scored very high scores by just playing the support role and fixing vehicles and being a medic. The cool thing is that you can pass out first aid, then raise a heavy machine gun and finish off guys to boot. Awesome stuff.

Additionally, the battelfield atmosphere is outstanding. The buildings and such are nowhere near as detailed as COD4, but when artillary strikes come down around you and you lose your ability to hear and focus, but find a hole or corner to hide in to ride it out, there is no doubt that combat must be similar to that.

A couple of real challenges that I wish had been addressed. There is only one multiplayer mode with two sides. Attacker and Defender. There are several maps, but most of them feel very similar. I wish there were some deathmatch modes, or other creative match structures. Rumor has it that they are releasing a new game mode later this summer. So we'll see.

Another thing is that while the grenade launchers are awesome to blow holes in things, they are worthless for trying to kill guys. I realize that they couldn't make the grenade launcher too powerful, but you should be able to take guys out with it. I have occasionally landed one perfectly, but usually it is only good for light vehicles or taking out walls.

The final problem is that there is no split screen or co-op mode. I love in COD4 to take on my son head to head. Sometimes we even just run around in the maps looking for nooks and crannies to hide in. But in BBC, that isn't available. Hopefully in the future, co-op mode will just be a given in military shooters.

This game is a must buy for shooter fans. The single-player game is worth the price, but the multiplayer is where it shines. I love both COD4 and BBC. To only choose one of them would be to rob yourself of the other. If you love military shooters, these two are both great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Under Appreciated Game, November 23, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Battlefield: Bad Company (Video Game)
I consider myself a casual gamer growing up playing Super Nes, Attari, and Genesis. And never thought I would be writing a game review. But I have felt compeled after playing Battlefield Bad Company for PS3 for the past three months. Bad Company is the most fun and addicting game I can remember. The multiplayer is unbelievable and the new 1.20 upgrade has really perfected the games graphics and gameplay. Being able to blow up and change your enviroment is really cool.

The game is underated. I have owned Call of Duty 4 and Far Cry 2, these games haven't come close and I have since sold them and have gone back to playing Battlefield Bad Company. I don't consider COD4 the game of the year.

I can't wait for the PS3 sequel. The best thing I can say is if you are looking to buy a holiday gift or a birthday gift this game would be a great for a gamer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good single player, great multiplayer, August 9, 2008

Single Player:

Battlefield: Bad Company's single player mode is good and I enjoyed playing it. It adds a few things that separate it from the pack: wide open playing areas and destructible enviroments. Unlike Call of Duty 4's linear gameplay, here you can approach enemies from different angles. This is nice because the whole game feels less claustrophobic and scripted. Sometimes you choose whether you want to snipe from afar or go in blasting away, or you can storm the enemy with a tank or other armored vehicles. Blowing away stuff with tanks and the helicopter is a blast so to speak. The destructible environment is great and I can see it being the future of FPS games because after this blasting a thin wall with a grenade launcher and seeing it still standing will seem silly now.

The control is good except for aiming. It's way too sensitive and takes awhile to get used to, especially after being accustomed to the precision of COD4. I turned the sensitivity all the way down and still it never feels right. I had to turn it back up for multiplayer because otherwise you turn too slow and you're a sitting duck.

The graphics are very nice and do the job, however I never really had the wow factor. You travel around with three squad mates with different abilites and yes they do help you out. But of course it's up to you to get the job done. The voice acting is great and so is the motion capture, these guys sounded and moved like real people which adds to the immersion of the game. However, the dialogue is silly. These guys are always joking around and they have some funny lines, but it's so unrealistic that it diminishes the game. One of the reason people loved COD4 so much is the realism. You grew attached to your squadmates, like Captain Price, because they talked like real people would in the middle of a war. That game took war seriously, and by the time you got to that amazing ending, you felt genuine emotion. In Bad Company, I always felt like I was just playing a simple videogame. The contrast between humor and war didn't work for me, and there was no emotional connection to the characters. Characters like the real people in COD4 and Drakes Fortune should be the future, it's time to move on from stereotypical videogame characters.

So if we must compare and take everything into consideration, overall COD4 is a superior FPS experience.

Multiplayer:

Multiplayer is a hell of a good time and by far the best part of this game. There's a lot to do, you can drive tanks and armored vehicles and also the helicopter. There are now two team modes: Gold Rush and Conquest mode. Both require different strategies and approaches. I like conquest mode the best. What I like most in this multi is the sense of teamwork that you feel. The point system encourages good teamwork and I like healing guys or fixing a guys tank and then hopping in and being his gunner. I wasn't to crazy about some of the maps in Conquest mode, they feel too small and there's a lot of dying going on.

There are I think 5 different classes with different guns and equipment. Over time you learn what class works best in different situations. If there are a lot of vehicles on the map I go with support class because you get a tool to fix tanks and other vehicles, and other maps it's usually just assault class with a good gun, grenades and the healing ability. Being an effective sniper in this game is not easy due to the destructible environments. You can't just sit by a little window in an attic forever, eventually they'll blast you out. This multiplayer is challenging and people new to FPS multis will die continuously at first. But if you soldier on and not get discouraged you'll begin to understand where to be and when. As you rack up points you increase in rank and can unlock equipment. As far as lag I never have any, everything runs very smoothly, but that could vary by person. Overall I love this multiplayer and am very addicted.

So the bottom line is Bad Company is a good single player and a great multiplayer and definitely worth playing.

4.0 out of 5 stars There's gold in them there hills!, July 1, 2008

Martin Bate (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Battlefield: Bad Company (Video Game)
The Battlefield series has been around forever now. It all started with Battlefield 1942, a WWII FPS. What was amazing about this game (and what would become the hallmark of Battlefield games) was that not only could you be an infantryman, but you could also be a tank operator (driver AND gunner), a pilot, a submarine gunner, or an artillery crewman. Battlefield: Vietnam pushed it to the next level with heat-seeking missiles (albeit somewhat unbalanced), and helicopters. Battlefield 2 (arguably the best one) stepped into modern combat, and despite its flaws won over hundreds of hours of my time. Battlefield 2142 was set in the future, and was received favorably. Now enter BF Bad Company, the latest game from DICE.

Story: 8/10
Yes, the single player actually has a story! Previous BF games either had an obvious story (WWII and Vietnam) or they had no real story (BF2... 2142 essentially said that the Earth froze over and war was waged). The single player puts you in the boots of a Preston Marlowe, a soldier in the US Army recently transferred to B-Company. B-Company is composed of the worst the Army has to offer, filled with soldiers who have screwed up and are punished by being meat shields. As Sergeant Redford puts it (I'm slightly editing the quotes), "They send us in before the Special Forces because they're too expensive to waste." Haggard, a squadmate, has a bit of a problem involving explosives, but lucky for you he tends to let out his stress in the form of rockets aimed at enemies. Sweetwater is a bit awkward but rather intelligent and wields an M249 SAW. Redford, the squad leader, is the only one asides from Marlowe and Sweetwater who takes his job seriously.

The story itself isn't amazing. It's entertaining, and the humor is good, but it's no MGS4. You essentially go on a hunt for gold and glory, and get into various fights along the way. Pretty short, but it's a decent play.

Gameplay - Singleplayer: 8/10
Let me just say: why did DICE make the enemy AI have laser accuracy?! Seriously, the worst part about the single player is that the enemy AI is usually heavily armed, appears in large numbers, and is deadly accurate. Meanwhile, your squadmates stand there being cannon fodder. You will die quite a few times in this game, but there isn't any real punishment for it. That said, after the first few missions the game gets a lot more fun (it gets more balanced). Overall it's worth the gameplay, but Battlefield has always focused on multiplayer.

Gameplay - Multiplayer: 9/10
Great. Probably the most significant part of this is the new destructible environment. The Frostbite engine technology allows for most anything to be destroyed - trees, walls, whatever. While entire frames of buildings won't fall down, you can essentially leave a skeleton.

BFBC handles very smoothly; I never find any awkwardness in the controls. The guns are fairly strong and accurate. You are indeed able to use tanks, IFVs, light transports, artillery, and helicopters. Jets were left out of the game, but it is still quite fun.

Battlefield veterans are familiar with the ranking systems used in BF2 and 2142. In BFBC the ranking system returns. You accrue points by killing enemies, capturing control points, and helping teammates. Every many points, you will be promoted to a new rank. Most new ranks give you an unlock credit, which lets you unlock a new weapon or item to use. Awards also make a return, with Trophies, Patches, and Wildcards.

There are five classes in BFBC. Assault is the everyman - he has an assault rifle, grenades and a grenade launcher, and you can unlock an auto-injector that restores health to your character. Demolition carries a shotgun, unlockable mines, and a rocket launcher for taking care of vehicles. Recon wields a sniper rifle, motion sensing grenades (giving you a sort of UAV), and my favorite: a laser designator that lets you call in bombs on vehicles (you have to guide the bombs yourself; a fairly easy task). Specialists get submachine guns or silenced carbines an can unlock C4; they're the Special Ops class of BF2. Support carries a mighty LMG (light machine gun), can call in mortar strikes with an unlock, and can heal teammates and repair vehicles (or damage enemy vehicles) with his power tool.

Gold Rush is the only current game mode, although a Conquest mode is promised to be released soon. In Gold Rush, one team defends and one team attacks. The defenders have two gold crates which the attackers have to destroy, either by brute force or by planting explosive charges. If the attackers destroy both crates, then the defenders are pushed back to their next outpost where two more crates await. If attackers can get all the crates, they win. If defenders can hold off the attackers until their reinforcements are depleted, they win. It's fun.

Graphics and Sound: 10/10
It's no Crysis, but the game looks pretty damn amazing regardless. The characters are very detailed, as are the weapons. A few textures are bland but overall the game will stun you (especially on an HD set). Not much antialiasing, but you get used to it. The sound is just amazing. I have never heard a game that sounds as good as this. Each gun sounds different, and each gun sounds different indoors and outdoors. Tanks and artillery are loud and powerful. Especially good when paired with a DualShock 3 controller, as the rumble makes for a more immersive experience.

Replayability: 10/10
The multiplayer will keep you coming back for more, especially once Conquest is released. I won't spoil anything, but let's just say the ending of the game screams "sequel".. probably in the way of some sort of downloadable expansion pack. If you want a solid multiplayer game, you wouldn't go wrong with BF Bad Company.

Now move out soldier! There's gold in them there hills!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, November 17, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Battlefield: Bad Company (Video Game)
I have been gaming for almost 2 years now and I consider myself a casual gamer. I was never an FPS fan until this showed up. This game is the first FPS that I actually finished (although on easy). I thoroughly enjoyed this game throughout. The story and characters are very funny. Haggard is hilarious. Graphics are amazing. But the best part is the destroyability of the surroundings. Depending on what gun/weapon you are using... you can take down small vehicles, trees, buildings, water tanks... almost everything you see in this game. You can even use your knife to tear apart wired and wooden fences. It does not sound much fun until you actually do it. In every level, after I was done shooting all the enemies, I'd roam around the village and blow the $hit off of every structure in sight.

Here are few things I liked:
- Environment destroyability
- Weapons (it has a huge number guns/rifles available, all based on real weapons... I never realized that there were that many)
- Sound (each gun makes a distinct sound, explosions sound very loud and real, vehicle sounds are also very realistic)
- Graphics (one of the best)
- Story, voice acting, dialogues
- Online gameplay (although I did not play much to comment about it, having this option is never bad)

I do not have any complaints from this game. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I totally recommend this game to anyone. It is worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why open a door when you can create one?, July 3, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Battlefield: Bad Company (Video Game)
I've been having a lot of fun with this game. The single player is a good experience, with wide-open areas and different options of going around doing things. So far the story is pretty good and I have to say the voice acting is great. In fact the sounds of this game are just amazing. Bullets overhead, mortars impacting near you, and the individual sound of your own gun all have that realistic feel to them.

Everything has that Battlefield gritty feel to it, and there's nothing more satisfying than blasting a wall down to attack a sniper that was hiding behind it. The Frostbite engine is definitely something considering how much of the battlefield is destructible.

And while you go around, be on the look out for gold and "collectibles," which are basically weapons that you can find and equip as you go along in the game. The uncommon/rare weapons are difficult to find and you can only carry one main. (so your loadout includes: Main gun with either grenade/grenade launcher, health injector, and one other item that you can switch out-- RPG, Mortar Strike Radio, C4, Repair tool).

The multiplayer is quite the experience too. Very wide-open maps with tons of breathing room. Working with teammates and getting a feel for each of the classes and the different weapons for each is a welcome experience.

Currently I'm trying to unlock the weapons/items in the game to give each class a boost. I'd definitely recommend unlocking the health injector for Assault and the laser designator for the Recon class. After that, it's up to your own preferences. The Support class is an interesting one, you have your Light Machine Gun (SAW, M60, etc.), health pack (can throw to allies), Repair tool, and the unlockable mortar strike.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated, April 11, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Battlefield: Bad Company (Video Game)
$20! Twenty dollars for one of the most fun multilayer experiences out there! This is one of those games that I kept telling myself I would get. Well, it wasn't a definite must have for me so I went a while without purchasing it. My friend picked it up then told me he got it for twenty bucks. Twenty dollars! It's not even a year old and it's less then twenty dollars! It does so much right too. The audio system will blow your mind. You'll see a bomb drop in the distance and then get the sound wave a second later. You'll fire a sniper rifle in a house and the sound will reverberate off the walls and even the shell dropping will have it's own sound, unique to the environment. The frostbite engine was definitely a nice move by DICE. And the destructible environments; ahh! As objects, and even the ground itself, come apart the gameplay will change drastically. When a team holds out at a base for the whole game, that means a lot. When the enemy first attack, there will be tons of cover and every thing will be familiar to players. But as tanks keep pounding the living poop out of the base the buildings will start to deteriorate in ways that seem different every game. Enemies will start to enter throw a hole in the wall that wasn't there before. A vehicle will cruise throw land that was previously covered with trees. The squad that was holding up in the house will have a really tough time as they start to have close to no cover (some parts of objects can't be completely destroyed). You may think that this destructible environment stuff is just a novelty, but it creates a very unique experience. It creates very cinematic moments in multiplayer. Think about that! Normally singleplayer is the only place in games where you have to sit back and just think about what just happened. Half of a building got blown away and then you just stood there in a staring contest with the tank that did it. Then it got taken out by a sniper's airstrike. Wow!

The single player...hard to say. It's much better then anything other Battlefield games have dished up, but that's not saying much. The campaign is worth playing though. It's short, fun, has some funny moments, and raps up pretty well. Multiplayer is the real draw of this game though.

Lets review; $20 compared to $40 for must games this old. In these tough economic times that money you save could be put to other things like shoe laces and tipping waiters. The audio is mind blowing. The dynamically changing environments create a fun, unique, and thrilling experience. And this is Battlefield. DICE knows how created a well balance multilayer game that flows (yes, I'm the one who keeps calling in airstrikes on your tanks). Get this game.

Welcome to Bad Company.
