Anyone who has been involved in the martial arts for more than twenty years should have has heard of Jim Arvanitis. He is the first martial artist who investigated his Greek warrior arts and came out with "Pankration." I read his previous material on this combat art, which dealt with the history of the sport aspects of Pankration. Since there were no written manuals on the specifics of this Greek art, he combined many of the known recorded combat systems to create his own version of "Pankration."

This book, as well as the companion DVD, focuses on the hardcore personal self-defense aspects of this art, which is called "pammachon." This is the battle field art and includes only those techniques that will take an enemy out in a life and death combat situation.

This is a large (81/2 by 11) formatted 260 page volume that teaches the basics of this street combat art. It is comprehensive in length. There are three parts to this manual. Chapters 1 and 2 cover the foundation, martial arts and self-defense and the way of the warrior. This is the shortest section.

The chapters in the second part of this text deals the basics such as tactical readiness and combat motion, upper body weapons, lower body weapons, striking theory and targets, stand-up tactical striking, Stand-up grappling techniques, stand-up defenses and counters against grabs and holds and ground fighting.

The third part of this volume focuses on countermeasures against armed assaults. Chapter 11 covers edged weapon defenses: unarmed, Chapter 12 deals with edged weapon defenses: armed. Firearms defenses are shown in chapter 13 and the last chapter deals with neutralizing impact weapons.

This is a good book to have . Arvantis is not saying anything new on the subject of self defense but what he does give you is simplicity in approach to self defense . Arvanitis is detailed in his explanations as to why or how a technique is used and is very mindful of the law when defending yourself .

Arvanitis has written a masterpiece as his work neatly and cleanly explains what in essence is how to conduct yourself in a crisis environment. While his Pankration examples are interesting to study it is his command of the true nature of conflict that astounds the reader. I question some of his suggestions against guns and other weapons for any other than an expert like himself (he is the first to say to run and avoid these situations whenever possible) but everyone will immensely benefit from the philosophy and narration.
