Editorial Reviews

Battlefield - Russia: The Eastern Front explores the crucial role played by Russia in defeating the armies of Nazi Germany. Hoping for a repeat of the successful Blitzkrieg that rolled across Western Europe, the Germans envisioned a swift capitulation by Russia. Instead, the Red Army stopped the Nazi advances in the snows of Stalingrad, waging a battle of attrition, in which hundreds of thousands of German soldiers and millions of Russians perished before liberating the city of Berlin. Now for the first time, TMG and NBC Universal bring you these detailed accounts of pivotal battles of World War II. Each episode covers one great battle, featuring portraits of the leaders and commanders, explanations of weapons and tactics, a review of the political and military situation leading up to the battle, troop deployment, and the story of the battle itself. Narrated by Tim Pigot-Smith (V for Vendetta, Quantum of Solace)! Watch rare archival footage from vaults around the world!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy October 28, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Whether you're a WWII buff, or just a fan of military history in general, you absolutely have to buy this, along with the other three Battlefield sets. These are the original documentaries broadcast on PBS back in the mid-90's, they were great then and still hold up today. Each disk is the story of a different battle, taking you through the prelude, the men in charge, the equipment, the battle itself, and finally the aftermath. There are no interviews as the purpose is to give you the over all strategic view of the fight. The film footage is from the actual battles, and not just generic battle footage like so many other documentaries show. Brilliantly put together, these are hands down the best documentaries on the actual battles of WWII ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars ein Reich, ein Fuhrer, ein History Channel December 17, 2010
Format:DVD
With the proliferation of WWII documentaries, it does seem like some channels are all Hitler, all the time. But this particular set of programs (all 6 DVDs) is really the cream of military history programs, not to be confused with numerous, similar titles (Battleground, Battlefront, etc). Battlefield is a British production that gives detailed information on each side of the battle: commanders, strategy, weapons, political leaders. The narration is low-key and intelligent, and reinforced with numerous maps.
The programs are encoded at less than 8 Mbits/sec, about one third of usual Blu-ray rates, and the image is full-screen, so the Blu-ray format was probably chosen for its capacity (3 2-hour programs can fit on one disc). The programs are encoded as widescreen, however, with gray pillars outside a narrow black band around the FS image. This is not good for a home theater because it throws ambient light into the room, but, mercifully, the pillars are a dark gray, so it isn't disastrous. On a regular TV, the pillars look black, though. The images and sound are excellent. All in all, it's wonderful to have this series available, and, given how much content is on each disc, the pricing is reasonable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for... November 15, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I had been looking for this exact part of the Battlefield series for a long time, after having seen it on The History Channel. The quality is great, definitely one of the better WWII documentaries focusing on the Russian Front.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome documentary, so-so Blu-Ray December 21, 2010
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
The Battlefield series originally aired on PBS TV back in 1996. Until now, you could only get it via VHS (Polygram Video). This documentary series is my second favorite of all time. Only "The World at War" rates higher in my book. You will see some of the best WWII footage imaginable. It's very in depth and well organized. When it comes to the battles, I have never seen a documentary get into such detail as this. It discusses the commanders, the weapons and tactics for each major battle. This particular set, Russia, is my favorite of all. The Stalingrad episode is the best treatment of the subject of any I have ever seen.
The blu-ray itself isn't all that impressive. Frankly, it doesn't look much better than a standard DVD. There is no "scene" selection, so it's nearly impossible to go back to a specific spot in the documentary. Most of the series is old WWII footage and the rest being computer diagrams and special effects. Neither of these really translate well to blu-ray. You are better off saving some money and getting the regular DVD edition. Regardless, this series is a must have for any WWII buff.

5.0 out of 5 stars In-depth documentaries January 25, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
"Battlefield - Russia : the Eastern Front" is a must-have if you're interested in the German-Soviet war of 1941-1945.
Three discs depict three crucial stages of the bloodiest campaign in history... From the German invasion 1941 via the battle for Stalingrad 1942-1943 to the final Soviet offensives 1944-1945... A fourth episode about Kursk 1943 would have been welcome to make this superb series complete.
The narration may seem dry but provides lots of details about both sides' order of battle, operational plans and background to some key weaponry.
The chosen footage is presented in the correct geographical and chronological context - something which is all too much lacking in similar productions.
The added battle sounds are muted, so they don't overwhelm the viewer.
The only minor point in my opinion is the repetitive soundtrack, but that doesn't prevent me from giving this DVD set 5/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good content but could use more.... May 1, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I remember this documentary from the '90s when it first aired. I was impressed with its depth and loved the whole series. Although I have a copy in VHS from a few years ago, I wanted the DVD since I figured the quality of the image would be better. Unfortunately, it wasn't....

The content of the series itself, as well as the presentation is still well above any of the documentaries of World War II out there. It's a shame that the DVD offering is not a "remaster" of the original. The black-and-white images didn't look any better (or clearer) than the VHS tape that I have. Another "nice-to-have" that was missing on the DVD is the close-captioning or subtitles.

But overall, if you're looking for an above average WWII documentary, this is a very good buy. The narration is clear, the explanation of the war-strategies plus their consequences is excellent, and the direction of the series is well thought out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic, repetitive, with fine old film
Not the best doc on the issue, but for guys like me who might retain info better with more repetition, it moves slowly and through the 3 discs repeats the same info. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Blu-ray
Of course DVD quality would be adequate for the 70 year old footage, but the story is quite coherent and the footage really supports the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kind of a short story on the war.
The videos are informative but you can't really cover the whole war on the eastern front in 3 hours. I think each video is an hour long. Read more
