4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect, October 5, 2009
This review is from: Battlefield (MP3 Download)
Since Jordin Sparks won American Idol a few years back, we've been hearing a number of hit songs from her. From 'Tattoo,' to 'One Step at a Time,' to the duet with the now-infamous Chris Brown 'No Air,' she's proven that she can sing anything from soft ballads to songs that require a lot of vocal talent. Belting notes that most normal singers would have trouble even thinking of accomplishing, Sparks knows how to sing, and it shows in the song 'Battlefield.' With its powerful vocals and its amazing beat, it's extremely catchy and can keep you listening until the end.

My one gripe with it--and the single and sole thing that keeps me from rating it as a perfect five stars--is the fact that there are places within the song that seem to jump out at you, thus jarring the flow. The first example of this 'jumping out jar' occurs within the first thirty seconds of the song. The line that starts at around twenty seconds has one of the harshest points of mismatched flow. 'One word turns into the' is suddenly cut off by something that you can't understand in the studio version of the song. This also occurs at around two minutes twenty seconds, after she finishes the line 'You better go and get your' and then cuts to 'We could pretend that we could be friends tonight.' It's a minor flaw, but a flaw that still affects the song. There are also points during the power vocal section of the song where you can't understand what she's saying (though I will say that Sparks' pronunciation is very good; much better than what you would normally expect in a song like this.)

Aside from its little flaws, 'Battlefield' is a good song, one that any rock-pop fan will enjoy.
