Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-12-The primary problem with these three titles lies in identifying their intended audience. There is a real imbalance between the sophisticated vocabulary and the brief, almost simplistic, content. In each book, discussion is limited to 20 historical happenings, people, or battles, all of which are allocated one double-page spread. Anderson takes a look at military campaigns and confrontations from the Battle of Waterloo to Operation Desert Storm, with an attempt to sum up the immediate and larger significance of each initiative. Mayberry starts off with Jane Addams, and goes on to include former heads of state, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, Mohandas Gandhi, and Mao Zedong, along with living leaders, Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela. Wheeler includes single events such as the Seneca Falls Convention, the Treaty of Versailles, and the Attack on Pearl Harbor, along with more long-term happenings, such as the introduction of slavery, the Great Depression, and the Vietnam War. There is much that is attractive about these volumes, including a nice mix of black-and-white and full-color photographs, maps, historical artwork, and charts and tables. Each spread includes three to four such illustrations. Content is well organized and, for the most part, clearly written. Attractive as browsing material, but useless for reports.
