Book Description

December 9, 2008
Feelings are running high in the Cotswold village of Thrush Green. The rector’s plan for the neglected churchyard doesn’t meet with universal approval; there is a clash of personalities at the local school; and someone has returned to the village after an absence of fifty years.

About the Author

Miss Read is the pseudonym of Mrs. Dora Saint, a former schoolteacher beloved for her novels of English rural life, especially those set in the fictional villages of Thrush Green and Fairacre. The first of these, Village School, was published in 1955, and Miss Read continued to write until her retirement in 1996. In the 1998, she was awarded an MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, for her services to literature. She lives in Berkshire.

From AudioFile

Miss Read wrote 30 novels about life in Thrush Green and nearby Fairacre. Each one of them carries the reader into cozy and complex small town life. The battles are over such things as how to tidy up the cemetary, whether a son should go to boarding school, whether Dotty should drive, and what to do about the new schoolteacher. Gwen Watford reads with gentle humor and understanding. Her voice is not too plummy, although one definitely hears a county style. This production will delight fans of the American Mitford series by Jan Karon. B.H.B. 5.0 out of 5 stars The most enjoyable read I have experienced ever, June 11, 1999
One day I visited my local library who where having a sale of old books and audio cassettes. As I was browsing through I noticed an audio cassette the author Miss Read and it was all about village life. I thought it would make a change to my usual reading and decided to purchase it. I have since bought 5 treasured books of Miss read's collection and will not be happy until I have completed the set. My hobbie of reading is now so much more enjoyable, I would recommend readers to try and read at least one of this truly brilliant authors books and I guarantee you will find it a light, funny and a very enjoyable read. To sum it up in the best way I can , (one of those books you will want to put the washing-up to one side for.)

I enjoy all Miss Read's books. They're just light, feel-good books that can make you forget your problems and just enjoy thoughts of a simpler time. Although life is not easy for the characters, they still exhibit strength and care the would be nice to see now. And of course, everything always turns out right in the end. I heartily recommend this.
