The larger than average font and division of topics into articles, rather than as consecutive chapters, make this a great book for children in middle school. It has a nice balance of information on both individual battles as well as a discussion about the tactics of warfare during the period: U-boats, trenches, poisonous gas, dogfights. World War I receives scarecly more than a few paragraphs in many comprehensive history texts for children and this book is a wonderful way to fill in the gaps that occur between the typical textbook treatment which goes something like this, "The war started when Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated in Serbia. Everyone was happy that the long war ended." Another feature appealing its middle school audience: some of the entries in this book are discursive and don't resemble dry encyclopedic entries.
