Editorial Reviews

Review

While Richard Taylor's slim volume is not the first book to be devoted exclusively to it, it is certainly the most interesting...Overall, Taylor has produced an outstanding study, comprehensive in its coverage, accessible in its analysis, fascinating in its historical detail. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Look at a Classic, November 21, 2010
This review is from: The Battleship Potemkin: The Film Companion (Kinofiles Film Companions, 1) (Paperback)
Taylor is extensively published in the field of Russian and Soviet cinema, and his expertise shows in this guide to one of the most famous Russian films ever made. Analyzing "Battleship Potemkin" is a multi-layered affair, from the montages of its technical presentation to its undertones of classical tragedy. Taylor covers all of these perspectives without ever losing sight of the basic cinematic pleasure of Eisenstein's masterpiece. An indispensable academic guide, and an illuminating mainstream read. Hard to accomplish both in the same text, yet Taylor does. Highly recommended.
