A kind of "best of" Galactica 1980,
By Proteus "colonial_jedi" (Nebraska) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica: Conquest of Earth [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Though, I do agree that the G'80 series was horrible, it did have some interesting moments. "The Return of Starbuck" was obvoiusly the best episode. "Conquest of Earth" starts off with the first part of "Galactica Discovers Earth" , then skips the stupid subplot and goes right into "The Night the Cylons Landed". Thank goodness they edited all the stupid scenes from it though. I think maybe Glen Larson released "Conquest" to kind of squeeze something good out of G'80. One review on here said that there was no explanation as to the two Dr' Zee's. Actually there is a redub in "Conquest" that mentions that one is Dr. Zee and the other is his brother Dr. Zen. For the most part, "Conquest" is not a great movie, but it's much better than the entire series of Galactica 1980.

A Sloppily Edited Movie Which Is Satisfactory At Best,
By A Customer
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica: Conquest of Earth [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I must say first of all that amongst the sea of people who were against the very concept of a "Galactica 1980" series in which the Galactica found earth, I was one of those people who actually thought that "Galactica 1980" was pretty cool when I was a child. Now that I'm grown up, I understand why this short-lived "Galactica 1980" series was a disaster and why people these days are screaming for redemption in the form of a new "Battlestar Galactica" movie. I would agree with many people who say that the series in which this movie was based upon is "bastardized".This movie can only serve two purposes: First, it should put to rest any curiosity about what elements made up "Galactica 1980" and it can introduce the unread masses to what was never meant to be in Sci-Fi television. Second, it's for people like me who just want one more glimpse of some pieces of the episodes in "Galactica 1980" before it fades into oblivion. After all, I thought it was quite cool to see Troy and Dillon wear watches which made them invisible and to see the bikes which flew. These are novelties. Other than those two reasons, this movie is altogether sloppy in its editing. The places where the score was rerecorded are disparagingly obvious, the voice-overs are very distinguishable, the change of actors for certain characters in mid-series (e.g. Dr. Zee) was never explained. Dr. Zee is one actor in the first hour and in the second hour, he is played by another actor. At least the producers of this movie could have done better job of making it look like they put some effort into this cut-and-paste film, and it only adds insult to the numerous injuries inflicted on "Galactica 1980" by diehard "Battlestar Galactica" fans. Buy it if you think it will become a hot collector's item in the next 20 years. Otherwise, pretend the whole premise of "Galactica 1980" never existed.

I loved the original when it first started. When they finally reach earth its kind of cool. They got new flying bikes and stealth technology..I just wished the movie was edited better. But its one every collector must have....long live battlestar galactica............

The Best Part Of A Horrible Follow-Up Series,
By A Customer
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica: Conquest of Earth [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Conquest Of The Earth is a made for video movie composed of two episodes from Galactica 1980, the short-live follow-up series to Battlestar Galactica. ABC realized they had made a mistake by canceling Galactica so soon, so they quickly revived it as Galactica 1980.As much as I loved Battlestar Galactica, Galactica 1980 was a laughably horrible sci-fi show. Fortunately, Conquest Of The Earth is made up of two episodes which were among the best of the series. I think it's an interesting movie with some good points. Too bad the ending does not give a conclusion to the problem of the Cylons closing in on Earth. There's enough there to satisfy the curiosity seekers, but not much else.

what a mess! i mean it would have been better if they just put two episodes in on one tape as two episodes. first they took parts from at least four differrent episodes of both galactic 80 and battestar galactica. ( Baltar was never in any galactica 80 episodes.) i preferre it when the producers would just release these shows in their original form. the first tv series i ever saw do this was the short lived gemini man. but back to the review they chopped, paste, redubbed and mascre this to the point you couldn`t follow the plot at all! even if all the tv shows were lost i would want to see this piece of junk ever again!

The horror, the horror...,

ABC realizes they canceled the 24th most popular show on television. They pump out half a season of Galactica 1980. Pretend it never happened. Oh, Lord, say it never happened...

Make it go away!,

Ok, everyone close your eyes, tap your heels together three times, and say "There is no Galactica 1980, there is no Galacatica 1980!" This pitiful half hearted, half budgeted attempt to revive Battlestar Galactica in the 80's was so terrible that everyone wants to pretend it never happened. Even Richard Hatch (Apollo) ignored this short lived series when he co-wrote his two BG novels. Basically, this flick has horrible effects, very cheesy acting, and at least a quarter of the movie is clips from the old Galactica series. Take my word, don't waste your money. You can buy all the episodes from the original series and be entertained for a long time, but this one will put you to sleep.

Why on earth didn't they let the Cylons kill Wolfman Jack? OK, this isn't exactly Shakespeare, but you know what - neither was the original Battlestar Galactica, which had to hold the record for most sf/x stock footage ever used in one series. This bizarre combination of "Galactica: 1980" footage and other bits 'n' pieces is worth a look for camp value for any "Battlestar" fan with a sense of humor - besides the aforementioned totally wacked-out cameo by Wolfman Jack, you have the never-explained "human" Cylons, the so-bad-it's-laughable f/x for the "sky bikes," a funky disco soundtrack, the really lame "Dr. Zee" character who's never fully explained, played by two actors in the course of the show (one of them Robbie Rist, lionized as the "ninth Brady!"), and to top it all off, a somnabulent Lorne Greene with a beard looking like nothing so much as a mummified corpse that walks. ("Just gimme the check, and let me go home..." he seems to be thinking.) I have fond memories of the original Battlestar although these days I can see what a fairly dated, hokey piece of work it is (still fun though), and this "Conquest" makes that stuff look like "2001." Get it if you're a fan who never saw the lamentable "Galactica: 1980" series and are trying to remember why it was an even more terrible "TV sequel" than "AfterMASH."

I agree with one of the reviews that this is a movie that captures the best of Galactica 1980. Now I know that Galactica 1980 wasn't nearly as good as the original series, but it wasn't that bad. It's just that the original series was so good, to many fans, Galactica 1980 is a let down. But it did have its moments. Most of the film, is taken from the series' 3-part pilot "Galactica Discovers Earth" and the 2-part "The Night the Cylons Landed". Plus you now have John Colicos as Baltar in it, something you didn't get in Galactica 1980. What always bugged me about "Galactica Discovers Earth" was that there weren't enough Cylons in it, but with this film you get plenty. And although "The Night the Cylons Landed" had a good plot, it was ruined by unfunny comedy and corny gags. This film has just the good stuff in it, and it makes both episodes seem a lot better. Apart from the editing, which was terrible, this film was pretty enjoyable, and I do recommend buying it.
