Another excellent companion to one of TV's greatest series, November 4, 2009
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion Season Four (Paperback)
The first three Official Companions to BSG were among the best "official" guides to shows that I have ever seen. Most such publications are pure puff pieces with no helpful info and nothing that helps fans gain any additional insight into the show. They reproduce stuff that is pretty much universally available. In other words, they are a waste of paper. The BSG companions, however, provide a lot of information that cant' be found elsewhere, even if you hit all the fan sites, the discussion boards, and listen to Ron Moore's podcasts. How do they manage this? Access to writers, actors, producers, and creative staff. And their input seems to be pretty uncensored. Everyone offers info that provides insights into the show that hasn't been available elsewhere.
The one complaint I have with this volume compared with the previous three - and perhaps it is due to the change in the writer (David Bassom wrote the first three, Sharon Gosling this one) - is that there doesn't seem to be as much about individual episodes when they don't work. For instance, in the companion to Season Two, everyone was upfront about "Black Market" blowing. Not everything in Season Four worked and there were some moments that flat out failed. There simply wasn't the honesty about this season that I found in previous ones. Perhaps this was defensiveness; because a substantial number of fans of BSG found Season Four to be a disappointment (let me be clear that I was not one of those who were disappointed). That one complaint aside, this was another excellent volume.
For those who have a degree of patience, I would like to point out that most likely the companions for Seasons Three and Four will most likely be combined with color photos to form a new volume. This is what happened with Volumes 1 and 2. So, if you would rather wait a while, in a year or two you should see a final volume with a title something like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA COLOR COMPANION, Vol. 2, authored by David Bassom and Sharon Gosling. But if you are like me, undergoing withdrawal pains from BSG, you are looking for whatever you can get in the way of a BSG fix. In that case, it should get you through a couple of days.

More than a Companion, November 29, 2009
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion Season Four (Paperback)
This Companion book for Season Four is an excellent resource for much information on BSG, Season Four. If you have a short memory, this quality paperback will bring back all the enjoyment of the video series as well as reveal some things that you might have missed during your original viewing. I use this and other BSG Companion books to go back and watch several of the more complicated episodes over again and get an increased appreciation for the entire BSG arc.
I highly recommend this book for BSG enthusiasts, short memory or long.

A must for BSG fans!, December 16, 2009
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion Season Four (Paperback)
This fourth in the series of "Official Companion" books is well worth the modest investment. It provides a synopsis of each Season 4 episode followed by behind the scenes information of the episodes.
