Not exactly "die cast", April 17, 2008

This showed up in my mail and I was expecting a metal die-cast vehicle. After all, the shipping weight is listed at 1 pound. What showed up (while still nice) is a MicroMachines plastic vehicle whose case is marked "die cast". Apparently the Chinese firm that puts this together is unclear of what the connotation of "die cast" is in the USA. I was disappointed with the purchase as it was not what I was expecting - at the same time I do not fault the vendor who sent it to me but there should be a disclaimer on the page noting that this is not a metal vehicle.

I can't believe I actually spent as much as I did for this, but as a recovering SciFi collector, I sometimes got to have something. To this end, it was totally worth it. The toy store back East that had this shipped it timely and chose USPS, who surprisingly provided tracking and delivered at the earliest time they'd estimated. So, when you need to get your hands on a Mercury Class Heavy Destroyer, then Amazon may have just what you need :)

I would first like to clarify another reviewers claim that this is not a die cast model. The main hull is actually made of metal, the two side landing bays are plastic. This doesn't detract from the aesthetics of the model, you can't tell by looking at it.
The detail is really good, comparable to some of the micromachines spaceships that came out years ago (although those were all plastic and this model ship is a little bigger). The model is small, I measure about 3.75 inches long, 1 5/8" wide by almost .75" at its highest (bottom of landing bay to top of engines). If you look closely it even has the new red battlestar logo on the center dorsal spine of the ship. The landing bays don't contract inward like the Galactica for a light jump, I'm not sure if they were ever shown to do so in the tv episodes.
If you are into the battlestars or into sci fi space ships, this is a must have. I actually like the space saving size of it, looks great on the little display stand included.
