BattleStations: Pacific is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Battlestations: Midway. The franchise returns with two massive single-player campaigns, the historically based US campaign and a historically possible Japanese campaign. Players will experience one war through two epic sagas to be a part of history or change it. Commanding the US Fleet, players relive the grandest and most critical naval battles of the Pacific War and for the first time, as the Japanese, players lead the IJN Fleet to a completely different ending to the war. No other game delivers the challenge of an RTS with the rush of real-time WWII flight and naval warfare. Players need intelligence and expertise to plan their moves in order to remain one step ahead of the opponent. The players command both strategy and action to anticipate every opponent move and turn the tide of war. Includes 28 major battles, 100 units including 21 new units, five new innovative multi-player modes across eight new multi-player maps, and many new features.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not loving it, May 15, 2009

= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Battlestations Pacific (DVD-ROM)
I've always liked World War 2 flight sims... and I got this on the hope that it would feed that particular enjoyment with the addition of a little fun in the tactical arena where you can control ships and squadrons of planes as well.

Let me put it bluntly, the game is far too "consolized" to be truely enjoyed on a PC. It would probably be more fun on X-Box. Playing it on the PC doesn't add anything to the experience, because they kept the "few buttons/simple controls" design in the PC version. If you have one of those X-box PC controllers that would work great for this game if you must have it on PC. You can absolutely configure the game to do 100% of whatever it is you need to do from start to finish on a X-box controller.

Because of the gaming console design switching between menus, commands, and other actions in the game is a pain in the rear using a keyboard and/or joy stick. Nothing seems intuitive and it feels klunky. Again, using a X-box style PC controller would make this better if you have one available.

Probably the worst part for me is that the flight controls are so rudimentary. No flaps to worry about. No landing gear to raise or lower. No ammo. No limit to bombs or torpedoes... it's 100% arcade style and no way to make it any more realistic than that.

There is some good. The graphics are very nice overall. There is also potential for some good, quick multi player fun for sure. The missions themselves are interesting and follow real battles from that time period. Ship battles are the funnest part of the game in my opinion.

So, overall, I'd say stay clear of this game for the PC and get it for your X-Box. If you don't have an X-Box, invest in an X-box controller for your PC along with this game, it would make using it's menus and functions a lot more intuitive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game!, May 23, 2009

This game is a combined Strategy/First Person game where the A.I. does the bulk of the work and you help along. First you need a high end machine to run this game, but it is worth it. You can choose either side to play to keep things interesting. You get proficient at Air/Sea/Land battle engagements as you work through the campaigns. I went out and bought a Windows compatible XBOX controller to help with the flying scenes. Very good graphics and well thought out scenarios.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome game!!, October 11, 2009

As a strategy fanatic, I think this is one of the best games I've played. Ever since I started playing strategy games (StarCraft, WarCraft, etc.) I wondered: "What would it be like to control this unit? Or that machine?"

This game fulfills that dream. You can build and command units just like a regular RTS, and if you wanted you would never have to take control of one unit, just keep issuing orders from the map.

But why would you want to do that? Why WOULDN'T you want to control a battleship with enough power to level a city?

Although it's awesome to be able to control any of your units, from PT boats to battleships to bombers (etc., etc., etc.,), there are a couple of bugs I noticed.

One is if your ship takes a lot of damage and you survive, you can "repair" your ship back to full health. However, once I did that and noticed the front left QUARTER of my battleship was blown away and I could see straight down through the ship. It's not a serious bug, but I found it amusing to be sailing a ship that was defying the laws of physics by still floating like nothing was wrong.

Another problem is that I very rarely find any opponents online. This, I believe, is because I'm using a public Wi-Fi router and the connection is either too bogged down, or the NAT settings are blocking my access to the main servers. (I'm living in a college Dorm, you see)

All in all, I am VERY satisfied with this game. I love blowing things up, and getting it here for $30 was a lot better than Steam's price of $50.
