This CD is well worth the price. Mocidade has arguably the best bateria in Rio de Janeiro. This material is all original and professionally performed and recorded. It is very strong medicine, if you are not used to batucada, and you have to listen several times to understand the intricacy and incredible power in this music. Batucada descended from Afro-Brazilian roots and was used in their religious ceremonies for hundreds of years -- after it's played for hours the Orisha's (Afro-Brazilian deities) appear and take hold of the participants, as they may well do for you, too, after you listen to this CD a few times. This is world class rhythm.

Required play-along music for samba drummers,

Mention "that cd with the guy in the hat on the cover" to any pro samba percussionist and they'll likely say "Oh, yeah, the guy with the hat! That's a GREAT cd!" Two cds, actually. I teach samba percussion and I recommend this cd set to my drum students for practice. Put it on at top volume and just play along! It's way more fun than playing to a metronome, makes your practice session feel like a party, and it is critical for learning the feel of samba and especially that elusive Brazilian swing (which you can't get at all from a metronome). It's all drums and only drums, at vintage 1970's Rio samba tempo (a beautiful, silky, grooving 120bpm for most of the tracks), featuring one of Rio's very top samba escolas, Mocidade. The tempo is perfect for intermediate drummers; It's hard to find recordings like this these days, since most Rio samba baterias play at about 140-160bpm now. Plus it's just beautiful stuff. PS - great for dance practice, too.
