Book Description

February 10, 1996

The works of French poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), a revolutionary figure in European literature and one of the most influential figures in the Symbolist movement, were translated into Russian earlier than any other language. Long before the decadents made him a champion of their cause, he had been appropriated in Russia by the revolutionary left.

This book analyzes Baudelaire's reception in Russia from 1852 (the date of the first Russian translation of his work) to the end of the Soviet era in 1991. It discusses his impact on Marxists, Russian populists, decadents, Symbolists, acmeists, and on the modernist avant-garde within a general European context, and it argues that Baudelaire became a many-faceted mythical presence in Russian literature.

Book Description

"Exceptional scholarship. . . . A comprehensive investigation of the Russian response to Baudelaire. . . . Translators of poetry will be fascinated."--Judith Hemschemeyer, translator of The Complete Poems of Anna Akhmatova

Adrian Wanner's analysis of translations shows that all translators have invented the Baudelaire they needed. In a series of protean metamorphoses, he says, the French poet emerged as a social critic, decadent, Symbolist, revolutionary, reactionary, aestheticist, pornographer, nihilist, and religious prophet. He appealed to members of both the progressive and the decadent camps.

No investigation of Baudelaire's reception in Russia has been undertaken before. Besides breaking new ground in the study of cultural interaction between Russia and the West and offering new interpretations of Baudelaire, this book contains unpublished material from various Russian archives, among them eleven translations by the major Symbolist poet Valery Bryusov.
