BAUSCH & LOMB CODDINGTON LOUPE 10X was once the gold standard of lenses. Everyone from the earliest archeologists to get their hands on one of these to modern petrographers and forensic geologists use a 10x lens and many, I understand, prefer a Coddington lens. I know I do.

First let me state why B&L is NOT the gold standard anymore: their lenses are made in China. I do not object to a cheap Chinese loupe, nor should you, if you understand their cheapness ultimately comes at a cost. Whenever I purchased anything made by Bausch & Lomb, I certainly knew (back in the day) it was NOT Chinese.

Today, it is Chinese.

So now B&L regularly floods the market with loupes that should never be released to the public: chipped, cracked lenses, defective heat seal between lens and lens-barrel, scratched/gouged casing, it's all to be found in B&L loupes nowadays. Generally the quality is acceptable - too often, it is not. So be sure you buy from a dealer who has scruples (nearly all of them do), who will check the quality of a loupe before offering it for sale.

A word about a Coddington lens: invented in the 18th century, the Coddington is a single element which means it is one thick plug of a lens. It is shaped like a dumb-bell, which eliminates all distortions and gives beautiful, clear magnification. The only drawback is the depth of field being so limited because you are only going to be able to see through the thin "waist" section of the hourglass shape. That is usually about 2/3 the diameter of the overall 'outer' lens surfaces.

Small price to pay: many scientists swear by the Coddington for clarity and excellence. As long as it isn't Chinese, because if it is, you may not be getting a genuine Coddington at all.

I had read a lot of the reviews about this product mostly centered around the quality of the lens, and how the workmanship and over all quality had diminished over the years. This is the first loop i have boughten so i can't compare it to what was offered in the past. This lens had none of the problems i read about, it is clear with no obtrusions or distortions. The field of view is narrow but very focused, it appears this product will have a long life if taken care of. The level of detail you get with the 10x is greater then i had expected and it is fascinating to look at all different kinds of things while out in the woods or in the home. The loop is shaped like a rain drop with a diameter about the size of a nickel. The metal cover is riveted onto the loop, how long this will stay on or how many time this will swivel back and forth is a guess. The metal cover is not overtly sturdy but it's intended purpose is to shield the lens from damage so as long as it stays in place it will preform its task. The loop came with a small bag or pouch with a draw string for closure. I like it because my kids enjoy looking at everything through it, their focus is on their surroundings and what things are made of.

I love this hand lens! It's sturdy and perfect for field use. I have also used it for other other things including splinter removal. When I originally went to buy one everyone I spoke to recommended this one.

This is a good 10x for the money, I'm an amateur mineralogist/rockhounder and occasionally need a good magnifier for jewelry stamps, super small print etc., and this does the trick for me. At 1" the optics are very good from side to side and it feels of good quality materials.

I was not able to see the markings on my mothers jewelry, and this made it all clear. A great price too!

Very nice to hold and the size is nice. Though the see through lens area is smaller than my Hastings 10x.
Looks rugged and good to bring to the field as it's a one piece lens construction instead of glued together 3 lensTriplet type.
Should be more water resistant. The price is nice too!

The optics are too small. I cannot easily direct it to one letter or symbol to read it. Your ad did mention this as a problem, but I still thought it would be all right. I have since bought 10x magnifying glasses.

Easy to use - recommended to me by my jeweler prior to my attending the Tucson gem and mineral show. Made it easy to evaluate gemstone quality.
