It seems odd that you need to 'break in' this simple device but you need to. After following the directions, it works like a charm.

Can't remember why I thought I needed this sander sitter. You have to set the sander down in it perfectly or it spins off the bench. If using a variable speed on highest setting the whole thing will "walk" off the bench if you leave it running more than a few seconds. First time my sander hit the floor I was a little more than upset. The whole mech is too light. As for...

It seems odd that you need to 'break in' this simple device but you need to. After following the directions, it works like a charm.

I make a lot of small stuff and I continually need to stop and rotate the part in the vise. I was doing these small spindles for a bookcase. 4 spindles x 4 rows x 2 sides x 4 sides per spindle = a helluva lot of time waiting for the sander to wind down. This thingamajiggie probably cut down the time needed by half. Really. No kidding.

If time is money, this investment started making profits for me the first day I owned it. Still, it seems awfully expensive for what it is. So, it only gets 4 stars.

UPDATE: I paid $24 for mine. I see that these are now selling for about $15. So, I'd give it a five.

First time my sander hit the floor I was a little more than upset. The whole mech is too light. As for the cleaning aspect, with the new stearite disks you can get, here on Amazon and from suppliers like Klingspor, you are hard pressed to ever load em up anyway. It's another one of those "good ideas" that just doesn't transfer from concept to actual use very well. If you just really have to have one, let me know, I'll send ya mine for the cost of postage. Can't recommend this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Why did I purchase this??...., August 3, 2004

I can easily say that Im a notch above being a "novice woodworker" and I have had this product for a year. I am finding some things that Ive purchased I use more others less. This I don't use at all and find it taking up space it the shop. I too have read the instuctions
1) it is a hassel and fustrating to have ones sander with rolled up edges. I found myself trying to accomodate the sander to the sitter
2) Clogging of my sandpaper really has not been a issue unless I really grind the machine in the wood or wanting to remove too much material (I use a belt sander for this)
3) I really got suckered in this one I would of perferd buying another pack of sand paper or a clamp with the money I spent on this.
Its disturbing to me that these types of woodworking products are being bought instead of an nice hand tool like a block plane or chisel which I am finding out I use a lot more and will last me a lot longer than this. I give one star for being fooled into buying it. I wont get fooled again.

My orbital sander certainly won't sit (running) on this; the base is too light and rotates around, essentially it is useless.

The thing is actually too small for a 5" sander. The instructions say to "fold up the edges" of the sanding disc so it will fit inside the holder. Huh? Why not just make it 1/2" bigger?

I *does*, however, make a convenient place to put my coffee cup!

This will pay for itself in no time. You can load up your sander and set it in this thing and in seconds it's like you put new sandpaper on. Worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars This really works!!!, November 20, 2004
This review is from: Baxter Creek SS001 5-Inch Sander Sitter (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is truly a good product.I had a little trouble at first,it wanted just to shake in the carousel. I called the manufacturer (Baxter Creek Tools) to inquire about it. They were a great help. It seems that I didn't fan the paper disc upward with the palm of my hand enough, as per the instructions. Apparently paper comes in all different sizes, some a little smaller than 5" and some a little larger than 5", The Sander Sitter will actually roll the paper automatically but it has to have some room in the carousel to start with in order for it to work properly, according to the guys at Baxter Creek. After that it did spin like it was suppose to.This is great because it allows me to set my sander down while running for a momment, to move my project around. My sander is a little older and the braking mechanism is worn, and it seems like forever when I shut it off to come to a stop. Now with the Sander Sitter, it allows me to shut off my sander and set it down and go on to the next job without waiting. My sander winds down safely to a stop in the carousel. All this does save me time. And remarkably it does clean my paper extending the life of the disc. If you have a ROS. this is a good purchase.

Major issues:

- Diameter too small - you have to trim the sandpaper to fit

- Too light weight - bounces around

- Disc cleaner is not attached - it spins, reducing the effect on the paper

Overall a good idea that was poorly engineered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read the instructions, March 12, 2004

I have one of these and I find it invaluable. However, based on what I've heard from others and what I've read here, there seems to be a great deal of confusion on how it works. BEFORE you use it for the first time, roll up the edges of the sanding disc and put dust on the crepe surface. Being both a male and a typical male I didn't read the instructions (instructions are for sissies and beside I know what I'm doing... most common last words prior to getting a Darwin Award), put my sander in it for the first time and had it vibrate right off my work bench with my sander in it... "what a piece of *&^%$#~!" was pretty much my reaction.

However, after reading the instructions (humble pie can be quite tasty) and several months of use it has paid for itself time and again in both saved time (not waiting for the sander to wind down) and sandpaper (the crepe scrubs and cleans the sanding discs like a charm). In fact I'd say it gets better with use, and there is a tension adjustment to control the rotation resistance (if required).

Made in beautiful Angus, Ontario famous for... well Angus is just up the road from me.

Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Limited usefulness, March 1, 2009
This review is from: Baxter Creek SS001 5-Inch Sander Sitter (Tools & Home Improvement)
This product works well if you are using a sander by itself, but it is too small if you attach your sander to a vac for dustless sanding. The sander will fall over if the vac hose is attached. I never use mine anymore.

This little device works as advertised. Turn off the sander and set it on the pad and you have gained a minute or so that otherwise you would be holding the sander for what seems forever while it winds down. This little device prevents scratches or falls on other surfaces and presents an easy way to hold a sander close by where it is needed. It works great!
