3.0 out of 5 stars Baxter - Baxter
Sweden's Baxter emerged at a time when female-fronted trip-hop groups had conquered the electronic world, but Baxter's eponymous debut tries to stand out from the pack with some drum `n' bass rhythms. Nina Ramsby's vocals have a cool, affectless quality that work wonderfully on the moody "Television" or the mournful and string-laden "I Can't See Why." The deep, thrumming...

wow...what a fantastic release. this 1998 recording on the Maerick label has become one of my favorite cds...matter of fact, it has yet to leave my cd player. there are definite elements of Portishead...some elements of Hooverphonic...some elements of Massive Attack...but it carries a solitary vibe that is undeniably that of Baxter. Nina Ramsby delivers sultry vocals with a whispery elegance, yet there is a restrained power waiting to be unleashed. the music blends elements of trip hop, jungle, dub, and downbeat....it is so very intoxicating after the first listen. Baxter is in a league all to themselves...every song on this CD is wonderful. the lyrics are deep...thought provoking...clear. if you are a music fan, you need a little Baxter in your life...
track #2 "Fading" is worth the price of the cd...trust me.

4.0 out of 5 stars woefully beautiful perfection, March 27, 2002
This review is from: Baxter (Audio CD)
Baxter is definitely on the order of esthero and lamb, dark and twisted full of churning staccato drum beats and woeful lyrics. It's a rare occasion when I buy a triphop disc and almost every song is purely perfect and beautiful. Out of the ten tracks here, eight of them are absolutely perfect. It couldn't get any better than that. I found the raw, abrasive epileptic beats of 'fading' a bit grating on my nerves and 'I can't see why' just didn't gel for me but the rest of this disc is INCREDIBLE!!

Nina has a lovely voice and when she sings "I need a friend, I need you" on 'love again' it's chilling and haunting. 'possible' starts off with a somber piano intro and I found myself thinking oh god not another dreary dragged out piano and voice torch song but then this mellow downtempo drumbeat swoops in and Nina croons over it all sending chills up my spine. 'so much I've heard' reminds me of laika's 'bad times' with it spoken word lyrics.

This is an INCREDIBLE disc! I even like the grungy cover photo which for me adds an extra dimension to the music. This is some of the most amazing music to grace my stereo speakers in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Somber beauty for the center of a soulful night, September 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Baxter (Audio CD)
There are times when you can tell a book by it's cover . . . Enter the world of Baxter and you will see how perfectly and seemlessly these three musicians have created this haunted brooding corner of the world. Former Salt vocalist Nina Ramsby has joined forces with Ricky Tillblad and Carl-Michael Herlofsson to take the listener on a journey through the hearts midnight meanderings. Searching, yearning, questioning, such lines as "Just tell me once again if you have dreams of me becoming you" will leave you wondering just what your lovers dreams might be, as well as your own. And yet Baxter is full of enough instrumental and rhythmic adventure to keep things very interesting on a musical level. This is not a CD that will leave you bored or depressed. As if to drive this point home, Nina sings on the last track "Oh my love, don't take it too seriously . . .". Is she speaking to her lover, or to the action of love itself. You'll be awake all night wondering . . . listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, March 5, 2006

This is an amazing album. Contains beautiful lyrics accompanied by pulsating beats, blending the softness and beauty of memorable melodies. This album is well worth the money and well worth many listens. They sound to me like, a sort of "American Portishead", mixed with "Spicehouse" and "Goldfrapp" and a little "Emiliana Torrini" with more Trippy influences rather than just Electronica. It's uniqueness is in the mixing of the voices against the hypnotic electronic compositions and unique lyrics. Baxter is full of enough melodic and electronic ideas to keep things very interesting on a musical level. I have been listening to this CD a lot lately.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it!, December 28, 2005
This review is from: Baxter (Audio CD)
This album is amazing!!! A friend recommended I listen and I was blown away. It's dark...gloomy.....but beautiful and absolutely real. The vocals are soft and airy even slightly eerie - visiting a kaleidescope of emotions. The beats are trippy and just incredible - never dull or redundant! Something between Portishead and Emiliana Torrini meets Timbaland induced beats. I can't believe I heard about Baxter so many years after the '98 release. Had I known about this jewel I would have purchased it a long while back. But it doesn't even matter that we're moving into 2006.... this album is timeless!!!! I've had it now for close to a year and the CD has not stopped playing in my Ipod. I am absolutely addicted to it. You must listen to, "I Can't See Why", "Possible", "Love Again", and "So Much I've Heard". But every song on this album is a good song.

This album I feel, is just as good, or perhaps even better than Portishead's "Dummy", in my opinion. It's that good! I absolutely love it. I've been looking for a debut effort... I'm just learning it is out there but a rare find titled "Baxter About This" I will have to get it! I just want more Baxter! Awesome beats... the whole record is incredible and beyond anything I could describe in words. So please DO LISTEN! Trust me, you will love it too!

To a Trip-hop fan....I highly recommend this CD. Comparable to sneakerpimps. Dark feeling with groovey hip-hop beats behind it all. 4 stars on this one.

With unique themes and haunting lyrics, Baxter has taken traditional songwriting to the next level. If you like Baxter, you'll like the equally inspired ledenhed. Fav track: Ballad of Behaviour.

5.0 out of 5 stars drum & bass anyone?, February 3, 2001

i first heard this cd on a long car trip....6 hours in a car with only one cd....greatest trip of my life...... generally i find myself buying a cd and tossing it after hearing the ONE song, but damn this cd is great from television to Oh my love . It's drum & bass gallore, this three guys somehow pulled off a great feat, mixed in some trance, electronica and bass on a soft yet powerful bunch of tracks. don't judge it by its horrible cover, pop it on your cd and you'll find yourself flying.

5.0 out of 5 stars finally...., May 16, 2000
This review is from: Baxter (Audio CD)
Needless to say this is a fantastic album. I am usually very hesitant to purchase an 'electronic' CD. I say 'electronic' because it is the best way to describe this much varied genre. (i.e. most people lump techno, rave, and drum & bass into the same category) Let's face it, Hardly ever a CD comes out of this type of music where the WHOLE thing is great, not just that "one" song that you overheard in a club or in your friend's car, and ran out to buy the next day only to be terribly disappointed and shortchanged. This album is well worth the money and well worth the listen..and yes, it even passes the ultimate test of a CD..it is the perfect companion to an evening, a bed, and a partner,...yum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't sleep on this!, October 10, 1999

I saw a video by Baxter on HBO, of all places. It was for "Television". I was immediately hooked. It's the closest thing to Massive Attack without being Massive Attack. Go get it.
