we're setting up a woodworking shop on a budget so the quality for price needs to be good. the case, while plastic is thick and doesn't receive much abuse on the ceiling where we mounted ours (just the occasional wack from a long board). the plugs are good and tight and seem to be wearing well. the recoil was quite disappointing and the tail is short (2ft) so we cut 18ft off the cord which tightened up the spring and gave us material for a longer tail, allowing more flexibility in locating. something the manufacturer might consider. all in all much better quality than the 16g toys, ready for daily use and well under the 200$+ price tag of commercial units.

After several years, my Northern 40 foot, 12 gauge, reel failed. I wanted a better quality product, but there seems to be a large gap between the inexpensive and very pricey reels, with nothing in the middle. After reading reviews and being interested in the extra 10 feet of cord, I opted for this 50' model. Initial impressions: (1) the cord cover is much softer than the Northern reel and I won't expect it to hold up well on my exposed aggregate concrete; (2) the take-up device works ok, but seems to be rather crude and noisy - acceptable if it continues to function properly. So far, it does take up the cord with less hassle than the Northern model.

A week after I purchased this reel, the spring loaded mechanism broke, and the cord would no longer retract. Being handy, I was able to take apart the mechanism, get a stronger spring and fix the reel. It works great now, but I would not expect a "Professional" series cord reel to break so relatively easily in my home garage. I would definitely not recommend this to a friend.
