I have been gardening for decades. For my evergreens, including Norway spruces, blue spruces, and white pines, I have used Holytone for evergreens, or fertilizer plant spikes for evergreens, for years with nice results in tree growth and color (including the blue spruces). I have used a seperate systemic insecticide (which is put on the ground and soaked up through the roots). However, I have been stunned by the results from this product from Bayer (yes, the aspirin people). Whereas I have mostly won the tree-disease battle over the years, there is not even a trace of disease on my trees after using this Bayer systemic fertilizer and insecticide. And the color of the blue spruces is the best that it has ever been - a frosty blue color. My other trees have thrived with this product, including oaks and others. This is a simple granular powder that is applied to the ground without having to pound spikes or carry hundreds of pounds of natural fertilizer. It is applied once a year and can be done in any season spring through fall. I have found the results, after one year, to be astounding.

I have been using this product once per year for the last six years. I use it primarily for Japanese Beetles and Whiteflies on Crepe Myrtles, Roses and Harry Lauder's Walking Sticks. The first year was the only year I did not receive complete protection and this is probably because the product had not fully distributed throughout the trees/shrubs. Every year since (last five), I have had no sign of pests on any of the treated trees and shrubs. This stuff is expensive, but well worth it. Check out your local garden store for the 10 pound size for better cost per dose.

THis is a very easy product to use - just sprinkle it around the plants, ideally before it rains, or water it in. I have used it before and it really does protect your plants all season from bugs. I always have plants covered with blooms in the spring. I have over 100 Azaleas and Rhododendrons, and tried to use the liquid form, but mixing 100 gallons of product was way too much work.

Tried this in Liquid form on my 6 ft tall Crepe Myrtles last Nov 2009, Wal-Mart had a sale on the 40oz liquid size bottle & I decided oh what the heck.. Just mix with water & apply.. (15.00) to treat four (8 foot)Crepe Myrtle trees for a year, normal price (in my area) is 20.00 for that size. Results: Didn't see any aphids , stink bugs, Japanese beetles or white flies on my crepe myrtles this year in 2010! Plus I did see Honeybees & Bumblebees that did visit the fragrant flowers. My crepe Myrtles bloomed from June through August, the earliest I have ever seen them bloom in their 7 year life ! But maybe it was due to the record Heat & 100 degree days of this summer. Normally they don't start to bloom until the last week of July.
------------------------
So this year I used the Gallon size on three 20 foot Alberta Spruces! (66.00) Going to compare it with the Granule form on 6 Norway Blue Spruces that are next to them (12 footers ) Saw a Bag worm on one of them last year. It was easy to pluck off the bag worm when the tree was only 8 ft tall but it is no longer easy to reach those critters, cant see any this year but I rather be safe then sorry on treating those rascals. Think I am going to try this systemic treatment at least this one year. Going to also try the product on my boxwood's and Euonymus japonicus shrubbery.

This year because of the severe drought, have seen a lot of spider webs, Mites and white flies hanging out in the tops of my evergreens too. Will get back to you in this review for an update in 6 months; had to use 2 bottles of the granular from for these 6 spruces (cost 100.for both) Normally I use spike fertilizer spurs & spray them with Seven or an Insecticide twice a year to keep them from harm .

This stuff is expensive so I only use it on the plants that get attacked by Japanese Beetles. It works wonders! For the first three years, my Crepe Myrtles never got any blooms because the beetles ate every inch of the blooms before I got to enjoy it. I tried natural methods at first but the population got too out of control to kill them one by one. Then I tried Sevin which ruins the shrub with white residue and I was certain I got as much pesticide on me as on the strub. Then I found this...I put it on every spring on my Crepe Myrtles and roses so now the only Japanese Beetles I see are dead ones on the ground. I turned my neighbor on to it when I saw him putting those bags out (which only attract the darn bugs unless you live in the country on 20+ acres so you can put them far away from the plants you are trying to protect). My crepe myrtles are now huge and one (based on instructions) takes 5 cups of the granules so wow it does add up to use. Read the instructions carefully, I would suspect that those not having luck are either not using enough or using it too late in the season. Definitely, prefer the granules over mixing the liquid. I put it down and schedule the sprinkler to run a few times over the next few days to make sure they all get watered in. I try to plan around any rain storms so that it doesn't get washed away.
