4.0 out of 5 stars Cast iron dutch oven
This oven is typical quality of cast iron cookware I already have. Basic, not fancy. It is a heavy and solid piece, the cover fits snugly. Like the other cast iron pans I have, I think this will be used a very long time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Casting
This Dutch oven was simply a disappointment. From the savagely dented box to the very lack of any packing materials what so ever, it was no wonder this poorly cast piece of iron arrived with a large gapping crack down the side. Its not clear weather this happened during manufacture or shipping but never the less, I won't stray from Lodge again.

I got this for my parents to use while camping and they love it. I also got them a cookbook and they enjoy teaching my younger cousins how to cook on the fire.

This is a great dutch oven! Arrived quickly and just as described on the product page. Was very easy to season and offers great cooking quality that only cast iron products can!

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT DUTCH OVEN, December 8, 2008

This review is from: Bayou Classic 7400, 4-Qt. Cast Iron Dutch Oven with Dutch Oven Lid (Lawn & Patio)
Love the DUTCH OVEN but didn't like having to season it myself. Also, having arthritis, I forgot how heavy this could be. It is VERY heavy for me, especially with such a large and thick cover. Seasoned properly and cleaning it properly, this makes excellent dutch oven! Bayou Classic 7400, 4-Qt. Cast Iron Dutch Oven with Dutch Oven Lid

I own this @ $21.99. I found the casting to be very crude, the lid would no-way fit the pot due to bumps and extrusions. I elected to keep it after a call to AMZ Cust. Svc. that resulted in a $5.00 credit. I plan to hit it with a die grinder to try to make the lid fit. I would not buy this again at any price. Lodge has a 5 gt. that is a model of precision @ $29.xx, but lacks the coal holder lid and hanger handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great dutch oven, does everything you need it to do, June 12, 2011

This review is from: Bayou Classic 7400, 4-Qt. Cast Iron Dutch Oven with Dutch Oven Lid (Lawn & Patio)
As noted in previous reviews, the Bayou Classic 4-quart dutch oven arrived from Amazon in a double-box (a cardboard box within a cardboard box). The lid *did* have a thin foam wrap, and the pot itself was in a large sealed plastic bag. There wasn't any other insulation besides this, but it sufficed: I received it undamaged, on time (Amazon free super saver shipping), so I have no complaints about the delivery. Upon opening it I noted the casting is a bit rougher than what I've seen with my Lodge cast iron pots. However, that didn't prevent it from performing as admirably and reliably as you'd expect from a heavy iron pot. The "pre-seasoning" was so-so, again as we seem to see on all "pre-seasoned" cast iron kitchen implements these days, so I seasoned it myself using the traditional method (see the Facebook "Cast Iron Cooking" group for more information about that). Now, my main reason for getting this particular dutch oven was to use it as a rice cooker. I've recently discovered that cast iron cooks *wonderful* rice (along with everything else!), and I got the 4-quart size especially to replace this cheapo flimsy aluminum pot I'd been using to make larger batches of rice. (Actually, the cheapo pot turned out to be a 3-quart, not a 4-quart.) I cooked up a batch of Thai jasmine rice, and it worked wonderfully: with the lid on, it boiled 4 cups of water in scarcely a few minutes on my stovetop, and it thoroughly pressure-cooked the rice so that it came out with barely any sticking, large saturated individual grains of rice, and wonderful flavor. After only the single seasoning in the oven, the rice *did not* stick to the bottom of the pot! Who needs a $100 rice cooker when you can make perfect rice every time in your dutch oven? In addition, lid on the Bayou Classic dutch is a 10-inch lid that fits perfectly on top of my Lodge 5-quart dutch oven and 10-inch skillet -- except that this has a lip that allows you to place coals on the top when you cook outdoors! The Lodge lid isn't shaped like this, and the coals can fall off the top. Because of all this, the Bayou Classic dutch oven is a worthy addition to my cast iron collection, one that will be getting a *lot* of use.

This product is heavy and is able to endure the tests of time, heat, abuse and wear. Buy it if you want quality. It will also work well with either direct fire and/or convection cooktops.

I bought two of these Bayou Classic Dutch Ovens and they are Great ! This one is larger than the other one and it is Fantastic !! This one is a perfect size for what I usually cook. The handles on these Dutch Ovens are really nice and the lips on the lids work wonderfully for coal or fire cooking. I use my cast iron cookware in my outdoor wood fired oven and they work great.

I found the Bayou Cast Iron Dutch Oven to be just what I hoped for, and ordered......I needed it primarily to bake bread, and it did precisely that. I can see that it can be used for many other dishes as well; its capacity to retain heat is certainly a plus. I recommend it highly. Dr. JS
