4.0 out of 5 stars Great pot, hard to clean first time
This is great heavy duty pot for a very low price. I've used it so far to cook a pineapple upside down cake on coals and stew. It worked very well, even without the usual camping legs. This made in China pot has many minor pits and defects in the cooking surface but cooks well after two rounds of seasoning.

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to clean
I have to agree with Frank Yee. Extremely difficult to clean. It is coated with wax and I spent 30 minutes scrubbing it with a green "scratchy" pad and dish detergent and still could not get all the wax off - it sticks in all of the pores of the metal. So I put it in the oven at 300 degrees and 1 hour later it still smoking. My kids are complaining about the stinky fog in...

This is great heavy duty pot for a very low price. I've used it so far to cook a pineapple upside down cake on coals and stew. It worked very well, even without the usual camping legs. This made in China pot has many minor pits and defects in the cooking surface but cooks well after two rounds of seasoning.

Here are a few minor issues I had with the pot that caused me to give it 4 stars. The lid has a loop handle that is really set up for a lid lifter. Removing the lid with a pot holder is risky, since the lid is so very heavy. The pot comes coated with wax to prevent rusting in shipment. It is very hard to fully get the wax off, requiring several cycles of heating and soapy rinse. The thin wire handles are the only secure way to lift the pot when full but its awkward and painful.

The pot is great but the difficulty of the first cleaning has me looking at preseasoned pot for the future.

This is a wonderful dutch oven...I hemed and hawed between the more pricey Lodge Logic (which my other cast iron pans are) and this Bayou Classis...Thrift won out, and I bought this one. I am not disappointed in any way. It was easy to season, and makes an unbeatable pot roast!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular (& really a 10 Star item)!!, February 8, 2006

Spectacular is really an understatement to the point of inaccuracy! I seasoned this beautiful item as recommended and then put it to work, starting with a pork roast and then a beef chuck roast. I like to slow roast and the meat turned out tender, moist, flavorful and overall fantastic. I look forward to other dishes just as great. Since it does not have legs, it works equally well in the oven as well as outdoors. Did I say spectacular? Oh yeah, I did!!

So I put it in the oven at 300 degrees and 1 hour later it still smoking. My kids are complaining about the stinky fog in the house and have gone to the basement to escape. If I knew what I now know I would have purchased an American made product and paid a little extra.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the alligator on the lid, March 20, 2007

Pre-seasoned would be easier but twice the price too. To avoid a smoke filled house you can season on the grill but make sure you can control the temp, too much heat and you cook all the seasoning off. As far as performance it does everything a big heavy pot is supposed to do. The basket is funtional for deep frying but not steaming. Nice piece of cookware.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Cast Iron., March 16, 2007
This review is from: Bayou Classic 7460 Dutch Oven with Basket, 8-1/2-Quart (Lawn & Patio)
This is one heavy duty cast iron pot! Very heavyweight. The lid holds a good seal to the pot. My only wish is that it came preseasoned. I sure made a smoke filled room occur. And of course, once was not enough to season, so I had to do it again. But overall, great pot.

5.0 out of 5 stars very happy husband, July 5, 2011

This review is from: Bayou Classic 7460 Dutch Oven with Basket, 8-1/2-Quart (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this as a Father's Day gift for my husband, and it was a great hit! I was looking for something primarily to use with a propane burner for our neighborhood outdoor fish fry parties, and it's perfect. I was concerned that 8.5 quarts might not be big enough, but it's just right for cooking a large batch of fish (or chicken) without having to waste a lot of oil.

As for concerns in the review, my pot was not cracked, rusted, or damaged in any way. It was not hard to season at all, and the smell wasn't any worse than what frying something indoors does for a day or two. If that's a concern, you can season it outdoors in your covered grill.

I did a little comparison shopping at a local cast iron outlet, and the only thing close was at least $20 more and didn't come with a basket.

My only "complaint" was that the packaging gave away the surprise. I expected it to come in the typical nondescript Amazon box, but it was shipped in the manufacturer's box, which boldly displayed a picture of the package's contents.

The husband and I are very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied, January 10, 2011

I bought this dutch oven for my husband. We have already used it twice to fry chicken. It's the best tasting chicken I've ever had. Everything tastes better when cooked in cast iron. The pot is great and the aluminum basket is very handy. The only thing that could make it better would be is if there was a small spout for pouring the oil back out of it. I would definitely recommend this dutch oven.

This is a solid product and very easy to use. There was some assembly of the basket that needed to take place but it was very easy to do. I would highly recommend this product to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor quality, June 12, 2009
This review is from: Bayou Classic 7460 Dutch Oven with Basket, 8-1/2-Quart (Lawn & Patio)
We purchased this as a Christmas present to ourselves. I was too lazy to scrub off the wax and season it for a few months, when I finally did, I noticed a huge crack all down the side of the dutch oven. Now it's scrap, and we are out almost $60. Cast iron, when properly made, will not crack like that just sitting in a cupboard. DO NOT purchase this brand! Go for Lodge Logic cast iron if you want a quality product.
