Product Description

Bayou Classic pairs traditional form and professional quality with trendy innovation. This stainless 10-gallon Brew Kettle is designed for serious home brewers. It starts with a stainless steel 5 millimeter tri-ply 10 gallon brew kettle with side calibration marks measuring gallon and quarts. It also includes a stainless vented lid, a stainless ball valve, brew thermometer with 3 inch face 0-220 degrees, stainless false bottom that sets 3.25 Inch above the bottom of the pot and a tube shaped filter screen. The try-ply bottom promotes even heating and fights against scorching, while the all stainless construction has no interaction with worth or acid. The narrow diameter and high side walls reduce the chance of boil overs and the false bottom fits tightly on the low side indention to reduce particles and grain from entering the spigot chamber.

It's a great size for 5 gallon batches.

Rather than messing with the false bottom, I find that the bazooka screen does a great job filtering out solids from your mash.

As simple as it is, this is very well made!

Arrived as advertised and in a timely manner.

Setup Comments:
Some assembly was required - the pot had two holes in it: one for the thermometer and one for the valve. There were instructions, but they didn't cover where to put the rubber O-Rings. There was also a plastic device that was some sort of ball bearing thing that I never figured out what to do with.

This is probably obvious, but make sure that you test it for leaks with water before you use it on the stove. You wouldn't want to be dealing with hot liquid leaking out of the thermometer and/or the valve.

Usage Comments:

The thermometer is too high when mashing. A 10lb grain mash with the corresponding 2 1/2 gallons of water doesn't reach the thermometer probe.

The drain valve is high such that over a gallon of liquid remains in the pot when the pot is level. You have to "tip" the pot to drain the remaining liquid. I don't see that there was any real alternative that could have been done.

The drain valve has a small lock that I found took some getting used to.

This is a good, solid kettle. The size may make it a bit difficult to use on a conventional cook top (especially one with a hood). I have found that I can get by using a step-stool to stir/mash. The kettle heats evenly and quickly. The built in thermometer provides an ideal set-up if you are using this as a mash tun (which I am).

The package arrived in good condition. It may be noteworthy that there is some assembly required as the valve and thermometer unit must be installed. I highly recommend that you assemble and check for leaks before using. It took me about 3-4 attempts at tightening the joints before I had a good leak-free setup. This is super easy to disassemble for super easy cleaning.

Now, I did notice a couple design flaws with this kettle. The false bottom (which comes in handy for mashing) sticks out a good inch and a half from the inside wall and the false bottom cannot fit around it. That means every time you want to install/remove the false bottom, you have to remove the thermometer setup first.

EDIT (May 20, 2015): Apparently I did not pass grade-school geometry. It is possible to remove the false bottom without removing the thermometer. It does take a little maneuvering, but it is possible.

Rather than messing with the false bottom, I find that the bazooka screen does a great job filtering out solids from your mash. The thermometer is installed at about the 4-gallon mark.

Another design flaw that was noticeable was the height at which the valve was installed. If you leave the kettle on a level surface, there is a good half-gallon that remains in the pot. Tipping the kettle towards the valve can circumvent this. The valve itself is installed at about the 1.5-2 gallon mark.

I recently purchased this kettle in upgrading my brewing gear. After my first brew, I am very pleased. It's important to get the bulkhead valve tight - I did have to empty my strike-water and tighten after I saw some dripping , but that's more user-error than any product performance problems. The thermometer was accurate, also. I am considering purchasing a second unit since I used this one as a mash tun, collected my wort in another vessel, cleaned the tun quickly and transfered the wort back to use as my kettle. Having a false bottom and bazooka screen is really the way to go.

I've only brewed in the Bayou Classic 10 Gallon Stainless Steel Kettle once but it seemed to work great. The volume markings are located both inside and outside of the pot in 0.25 gallon increments. I haven't checked to see if the volume markings are accurate yet but they seem to be right. The pot seems sturdy. I only wish that the valve on this item was located a little lower. The item leaked a little from where the valve meets the face of the pot but with a little plumbers tape, from the hardware store, the leaking stopped completely. All in all a nice buy.

Product seems like it will perform well. Nice quality and a good box for storage when it is not in use. For this price I was expecting the handles to be riveted to the lid and pot body. I am not so sure that the factory spot welds will stand up to the test of time and so I may have a professional welder add some material just as a precaution against spilling ten gallons of boiling liquid on myself. I think the handles could have been more substantial for a pot of this size, which will weigh in the neighborhood of 80 pounds when full. I have not tested it yet. The gauge comes with two wrenches and I feel comfortable that the o-ring gaskets will be leak proof. If they are not, I will simply get thicker ones at the hardware store.

I really like this pot. I have made two batches of beer so far.
Pros:
It seems well made.
Handles are welded on.
Thermometer and spigot bolt on through hole in pot using o-rings to seal.
Bottom is thick and transfers the heat evenly.
Cons:
Probably should order some extra o-rings(came with 2 spare)
Packaging could be better. Mine came with a small dent courtesy UPS.
