5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, Sturdy and Idiot-proof
Cooking on a gas grill should be simple, and this is about as easy as it gets when you need to do your cooking in a great big pot. The instructions were barely necessary (but they are) and setting it up took all of 60 seconds. It had no trouble holding and heating a commercial-sized 62-quart stainless steel pot full of Chesapeake Bay crabs, and later in the week the deep...

Cooking on a gas grill should be simple, and this is about as easy as it gets when you need to do your cooking in a great big pot. The instructions were barely necessary (but they are) and setting it up took all of 60 seconds. It had no trouble holding and heating a commercial-sized 62-quart stainless steel pot full of Chesapeake Bay crabs, and later in the week the deep frying of a whole turkey. It was also easy to detatch and store. It is relatively light weight (a pleasant surprise) but quite sturdy, it has plenty of grill and burner area to keep a loaded pot steady and hot, and is just what I need for entertaining big gatherings at our weekend home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home Brew Awesomeness!, January 22, 2011

This review is from: Bayou Classic SP50 Tall High-Pressure Outdoor Gas Cooker (Lawn & Patio)
My friend and I split the cost of the Bayou Classic SP50 for our home brewing and it has been the best thing to had to our brewing arsenal! It get's 10 gallons of wort boiling in about 15-20 minutes and maintains heat with it's easy to control knob. We pass it back and forth so it sometimes takes a beating traveling as much as it does, but it holds as strong as the day we got it and it still helps us brew some amazing beers! We recommend it for any home brewer out there who is looking to get out of the kitchen so their wive's don't freak out over the sweet smell of boiling wort thru out the house!

5.0 out of 5 stars Meets expectations, July 12, 2007
This review is from: Bayou Classic SP50 Tall High-Pressure Outdoor Gas Cooker (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this gas cooker for those times when I need to use large pots or cook smelly fried foods. It is everything I was hoping for. The construction is tough and durable, and it will probably outlast me! The shipping was fast and free, it arrived in about 4 days only.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outside canning, September 15, 2008
This review is from: Bayou Classic SP50 Tall High-Pressure Outdoor Gas Cooker (Lawn & Patio)
Needed a method for outdoor canning as I've had my smooth top range break while canning on it. I have only used the Bayou Classic for two tomato hot water bath canning sessions outside, but it has worked well both times. Plan on using it for pressure canning my green beans within next few days.

I have been useing this type burner for 20 years, my other one is worn out and was 150000 btus, to hot to regulate.
This one is perfect and the wind does not blow it out. It is taller and no need to bend over loading and unloading the canned goods. Great.

happy with purchase of the Bayou Classic SP50 tall. boils lots of water fast! disappointed it is made in China like everything else. That said the construction appears fine. solidly built. manufacturer claims it will work at low heat just to keep things warm. I do not find that so. If I turn the flame down it blows right out with the slightest bit of breeze. works best medium heat to high. produces lots of heat, so when I added 4 lobsters to pot of boiling water the water came back to rolling boil VERY quickly. at $60 with free shipping it's a no brainer.

Nice burner for the price you pay. Plus you get free shipping from Amazon. It doesn't get any better. The product seems to be very durable. Don't listen to others say that the welds are cheap. I used to weld, and these are nice welds on the legs and surface.

This is an outstanding product and I highly recommend it. I have just purchased my second one as a result of losing the first to years and years of hard use. Honestly, if it had been kept out of the weather better it may have lasted longer. It's a simple and safe unit that cooks quite efficiently. We use ours for an oyster steamer mostly and I don't think I'd use anything else. The company makes a shorter model of this cooker if space is an issue. In my opinion, it just makes cooking/stewing easier if you don't have to bend over as much. You can't beat the price if you're purchasing online... just be sure to inspect it before you use it because you know how shipping bulky items can bring about a surprise or two.

I've owned other turkey fryers, and just received this one from Amazon. (Superb shipping and order handling, as always!) Two big problems with this unit -- bad design, or did I just get a lemon?

1. The knob you turn to increase and decrease the gas is BACKWARDS! Nope, I'm not losing my marbles -- on this one you turn the knob clockwise to INCREASE the amount of gas (and the height of the flame!) This is the exact opposite of any other knob you've ever used (such as a sink or spigot or other propane appliance). Who cares? Well, if you have a grease fire and rush to turn the fire off, you're probably going to give that knob a big yank in the wrong direction (based on every other knob you've ever used), thereby making the flame BIGGER, not smaller.

2. These fryers usually come with a simple air control valve -- it lets you adjust how much air mixes with the gas. This helps you make the flame a nice blue color (good) instead of mostly yellow (bad). On other units I've owned this is basic and easy to use. On this model the valve is very flimsy, and you seem to have a choice of setting the knob from Wide Open to Wide Open! (It never really closes much!) I was unable to set the flame to the right consistency, which is necessary for proper cooking.

I called the manufacturer's toll-free number to get help with both of these items and they didn't seem all that interested -- all they could recommend is that I return it to Amazon (and that's exactly what I'm doing!)

I DO recommend buying a turkey fryer -- it's a lot of fun if the usual safety steps are followed -- but I do NOT recommend that you buy this one!
