South of the Mason-Dixon Line lies a strange land of gods and monsters; a world parallel to our own, born from centuries of slavery, civil war, and hate.Lee Wagstaff is the daughter of a black sharecropper in the depression-era town of Charon, Mississippi. Lee's only hope is to follow Lily's trail into this fantastic and frightening alternate world. Along the way she enlists the help of a benevolent, blues singing, swamp monster called Bayou. Together, Lee and Bayou trek across a hauntingly familiar Southern Neverland, confronting creatures both benign and malevolent, in an effort to rescue Lily and save Lee's father from beinglynched.BAYOU VOL. 2 collects four new chapters of the critically acclaimed webcomic series by Glyph Award nominee Jeremy Love.

can't wait for Vol. 3 February 23, 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the second volume printing the webcomic. Continuing from where Vol. 1 left off, this is a engrossing story set in 1920s Mississippi Delta of a young girl's journey through a fantasy world to find her lost best friend and find evidence that will clear her father's name and save him from being lynched. Even though this comic is no longer being published over the web, I hope they continue publishing the print version. Not for kids due to language and adult content. Recommended for adult who like fantasy, history and southern folklore.

Good, but... June 28, 2011
Format:Paperback
Down south in a time of great depression lives a young black sharecropper's daughter, Lee Wagstaff, who in trying to save her father from being hanged is suddenly thrust into a world like and unlike our own. A world of gods, ghosts, and monsters from times long since forgotten. Lee and her companion Bayou trek through this world trying to find Lily Westmorelend, Lee's missing white playmate. Darkness is chasing after Lee and her companions...can Lee find her missing companion and her way home? Or will they remain lost.

I really love the illustrations in this work. They seem to be a combination of pastels and watercolors and Jeremy blends them together well, with rich colors and textures. The artwork really enhances the story and gives us a good idea of the people and the world that surrounds them. His talent is amazing and I can't believe that this was webcomic just because the level of detail is so extraordinary. Jeremy's ability to capture human emotion, fear, hatred, and sorrow is absolutely fantastic. You can look at the characters and instantly know what they're feeling and imagine them sitting next to you.

And know we come to the but...to me the writing just isn't as good in this second volume. In part because we start meeting so many different characters that I feel like I need a chart to keep up with who's who. The next problem is that Jeremy starts revealing some of the past of the characters, like Bayou and Rabbit, but the transition is a bit lacking to me. We go from the present parallel world, to the past real world that Lee comes from. Perhaps when it was a webcomic it was easier to make sense of the transitions as the pages might be more clearly defined, but in book format it lacks some of that. I do like that the story pulls no punches at illustrating the harsh reality of the deep south during the time period and presenting all of the characters, even the dark ones, as human.

Overall I still really like the story, but I do wish that we knew where the story might end because this is clearly one of those stories where you have to look at it as a whole and not a part. I look forward to reading the next volume and hopefully drawing one more step to the conclusion.
