5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and accurate
I researched thermometers through Consumer Reports before deciding on this one (and after breaking the old-fashioned mercury thermometer that I'd had for years, and loved). This was the most highly-rated one that CU reviewed and I can see why. It's extremely easy to use and very accurate. I would definitely recommend this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Totally useless
The battery in my old digital thermometer went dead after three years. Not unexpected. I bought a new battery but couldn't get the new battery placed inside the case correctly. So I decided to buy a new thermometer because I was happy with my old one from Walgreens. The BD was inexpensive. Big mistake. The day I received the BD, I was feeling well, and decided to...

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great!, May 24, 2009

I bought this thermometer based on several reviews that I had read and that it had been recommended in Consumer Reports. I have been using this product for about 2 months now for recording my morning temperature as part of tracking my fertility.

Pros: I brought this to my gynecologist appointment and asked my nurse practitioner to take my temperature. Since their equipment has to be checked regularly for accuracy, I figured it would be a good test to see how accurate this thermometer really is. The BD Digital thermometer came up with the same temperature as the clinic thermometer...very accurate!
In addition, it comes with a case to protect the display and keep the probe end from getting dirty between uses.
When you turn on the thermometer it will give you the last temperature it recorded and there is a backlight feature.

Cons: You do have to be more patient with this thermometer than some others out there as it takes approximately 1 minute to get the temperature, but this is part of its accuracy...if it took less time, it would not be as accurate.
Also in order to let you know that it is still working, it beeps every four seconds until it is done when it beeps 3 more times. The beeping wouldn't be so bad, except it is quite loud. I put my finger over the hole in the underside of the thermometer to dampen the noise a bit.
The backlight does not stay on the whole time the display is on. I'm sure it is to save battery life; and since the thermometer does give you it's last recorded temp when you turn it on again, it really isn't that big of a deal for me.

Overall, I really like this product and would buy it again as the cons are not really that bad and the thermometer is so accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Thermometer, May 6, 2008

I purchased this thermometer b/c Consumer Reports recommended it. It takes longer to record a temperature than an "instant read" digital thermometer, but it's cheaper and just as accurate. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate, Dependable, September 27, 2009
A Kid's Review
This review is from: BD Digital Thermometer (Health and Beauty)
Strong reviews from Amazon and Consumer Reports convinced me to buy the BD Digital Thermometer - after being disappointed by several other types over the years.

The pluses:
- The construction is solid and the fit and finish are better than competing units.
-Accuracy and consistency are excellent. Our three BD units always read within 0.1 degree of one another.
-The memory feature is handy. The thermometer upon startup displays the last temperature.

Minor issue:
If you immediately take your temperature again, the unit will display a temperature higher by 0.4 degree or so. This and other digital thermometers are most accurate on the first reading. Digital thermometers have to compensate for the loss of heat from the housing. If there is retained heat from an immediately prior use, the unit will read a bit high on the second use. So, rely on the first reading.

Notes:
- This unit takes about a minute to display your temperature. However, test reports show that units that display a result more rapidly are less accurate.
- Hold this and any thermometer in place under the tongue without shifting. The tip should be fairly deep into the back of the mouth for the most accurate reading.
- Body temperature can vary 1 to 2 degrees through the day. Temperature is usually lowest in the early morning and peaks in late afternoon. Don't worry about there variances.

Bottom line: Well constructed, accurate and dependable.

This works great! It is easy to use, has a backlite so you can read it in the dark, the batteries last forever since it automatically shuts off after reading, no worries it saves the last reading just turn it back on. Feels smooth and long enough for both infant and adult use. It is a very accurate thermometer but slow...between 30secs - 90 secs! depending on the times...not ideal for a baby but wonderful for older kids and adults.

This is the only BBT thermometer that I have used and I have to say that I LOVE it. I am glad that I read the reviews. It took me a little time to get used to the beeping but it didn't keep me from going back to sleep. My husband doesn't even hear it and has never woken up from it. I also love that it records the last temp. read so that I don't have to write it down all of the time right away. I would recommend this product to anyone.

The pluses:
- The construction is solid and the fit and finish are excellent.

Bottom line: A good unit that is well constructed and accurate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well but if you are hard -of -hearing..............., August 12, 2009

I will spare everyone by not rehashing the complimentary remarks about this thermometer.

I am pleased with accuracy, appearance, and ease of use. I am hard of hearing and could not hear the beeps. I use it anyway and trust my sense of timing.

I have difficulty hearing other "beeping things" such as my camera. I believe manufacturers should design these type items with lower frequency beeps which might then be audible to the hard of hearing or "Audio Unblessed" - whatever the PC term is.

Someone commented on the toughness of the packaging. I agree, but am saving mine in the event I attend a town hall meeting about the Obama health care plan, when I will use it as body armor.

The battery in my old digital thermometer went dead after three years. Not unexpected. I bought a new battery but couldn't get the new battery placed inside the case correctly. So I decided to buy a new thermometer because I was happy with my old one from Walgreens. The BD was inexpensive. Big mistake. The day I received the BD, I was feeling well, and decided to give the thermometer a test run prior to needing it in the future. The BD never worked correctly. I could leave it under my tongue for almost 5 minutes, and the thing would not beep to show that the temperature was complete. The temperature readings varied from 95.3 degrees to 98.8, all within a half hour.
Not worth the hassle and expense of sending back. Unfortunately, it is destined for a landfill much ahead of its time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, October 18, 2009

I had been searching for a good basal thermometer and the ones purchased at CVS or Wal-Mart were lacking some important features. The thing I love about this thermometer is that it has a continual beep feature (which I admit is a bit annoying so early in the morning) but hearing the beep insures me that it's working properly. My temp is taken in about a minute which beats most competitors and it has a back light so I can see my temp before I shut the device off (it rounds the temp to 1/10th of a degree). For those of you ladies out there who are trying to conceive, you'll appreciate the fact that you can see your temp without having to turn the bedroom light on. It also helped me know if I was or was not still fertile. I highly recommend this thermometer. The only criticism I have is that I wish the beeping had a volume control so I could turn it down!
