4.0 out of 5 stars Solid be-bop blowing session from 1964, March 20, 2003

This review is from: Be Bop Revisited (Audio CD)
Alto saxophonist Charles McPherson wears his Charlie Parker influence proudly on his sleeve on his recording debut as a leader from 1964. The set list is mostly bop classics, plus the ballad "Embraceable You", and a blues derived from a Bird solo. Rudy Van Gelder's recording quality certainly surpasses anything Bird had available to him in his lifetime. McPherson is a bit more refined than Parker, yet there are plenty of fiery moments. McPherson and trumpeter Carmell Jones get most of the solo space, though pianist Barry Harris contributes his Bud Powell-influenced lines as well.

Charles McPherson - Sax (Alto)
Carmell Jones - Trumpet
Barry Harris - Piano
Nelson Boyd - Bass
Albert "Tootie" Heath - Drums
Rudy Van Gelder - Engineer
