The reviews in the english branch of amazon, are very very good (4 1/2 stars) and from a lot of readers too. I really can't understand why this book has not been rated at all. Maybe because it's pure british chick lit (although the male character Gabe is american). This is in fact a very nice book, very nicely written, fun, fast pacing and manages to set a couple of questions, like what if indeed every wish we made came true, would that necessarily be a good thing? Yes, I loved the twists of the tale and Heather's transformation as she realises what is important and what is not in her life.
The story of the book is as follows: Heather buys a lucky heather from a gipsy. Suddenly she realises that every wish she makes becomes true: she finds a seat in the subway, a place to park in front of her apparment, someone to sublet her flat, the last pair of the shoes she fancies in a great sale and most of all, her neighbor from across the street that she fancied all along takes notice of her. Could there be a hitch in all these wonderful things? It appears that there is. It's not perfect, but it sure is a nice, funny, interesting book with a storyline that is after all different from your usual chick lit. It's chick lit of course, not Tolstoy, and a few relaxing hours is what it will offer. I certainly enjoyed reading this and will check for anything else that Potter has to offer.

I had read Alexandra Potter's book "Do You Come Here Often?" and thought this would be just as good in the chick lit department. This book was not as well written and the characters weren't as complicated or interesting. I guess I was expecting something better...

I happened to come across this book at the airport in Japan, read the back cover and a couple of pages, and was hooked! I bought it and finished it on the ride back to the States. The people sitting around me on the plane were giving me odd looks because I kept snickering.
Alexandra Potter is brilliant and she writes genuinely- which is tough to find in authors these days. I have lent this book to several of my girlfriends and they have thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Keep an open mind- it is fiction, and it is chick lit! Have fun and happy reading :)

Be Careful What You Wish For is a nicely done concept about Heather Hamilton, who comes by some "lucky heather" from a gypsey, and watches in amazement as her entire life begins to change. Traffic jams clear up, the perfect pink shoes appear -- and so does the perfect man!
But, sometimes what you wished for is not as dear as what finds you by mere "mortal means." And when issues of life and death enter the picture, Heather's view of what is important radically changes, bringing into focus what truly matters. Alexandra Potter has provided readers with some fun moments and cute characters that move the story along nicely. It's an entertaining, light read. |
