4.0 out of 5 stars Porpoise Diving Life March Book Review

Staying true to our March 2007 PDL theme ([...]), I think it's safe to say that this young man has laid down his net and is moving headlong into some pretty powerful "follower-ship." Just in case you were wondering, Zach wants to end slavery and human trafficking in his lifetime. He's making a huge difference by creating awareness of a very dire crisis...

1.0 out of 5 stars Too much God
If you are a serious Christian interested in this topic then you will like this book. For me, I am disappointed that I wasn't warned about the biblical references and overall Christian perspective taken. While I admire this boy's passion and resolve, I'm tired of being preached to by Christians. I returned the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Porpoise Diving Life March Book Review, March 13, 2007

[...]

Staying true to our March 2007 PDL theme ([...]), I think it's safe to say that this young man has laid down his net and is moving headlong into some pretty powerful "follower-ship." Just in case you were wondering, Zach wants to end slavery and human trafficking in his lifetime. He's making a huge difference by creating awareness of a very dire crisis in our world, speaking before thousands of people and simply stepping up to the plate to do his part.

Zach's book is a very engaging and educational read, though it always feels true to the style of a normal 15-year-old. Yes, it's geared toward a younger generation, but the beauty of his writing style is that any normal kid his age (or any adult, for that matter) will see himself/herself as a potential agent of change. Because he's not lofty in his approach, what he's done comes off as doable for the rest of us too.

If you have kids, you'll want to buy this book--if only so that Zach can be an inspiration to them. And maybe in the process, we'll have more kids like him springing up to embrace a hurt world (I think everyone would agree that this would be a good thing). Even if you don't have kids, buy this book and you might be surprised to find his passion is contagious enough for you to change the world, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really cool book, February 19, 2007
By
This review is from: Be the Change: Your Guide to Freeing Slaves and Changing the World (invert) (Paperback)
The author seems like a down-to-earth, normal 15 year-old. Oh, yeah -- and he wants to end slavery around the world in his lifetime. Only problem, there are 27 million slaves in captivity around the world. Zach communicates with passion the stories of people who have inspired him to lead a global effort to fund the rescue of slaves. Young people will be similarly inspired; adults will be challenged and educated, we all may be changed. Get this book for every kid you know -- this generation will believe they can change the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that could change this teenage generation, December 28, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Be the Change: Your Guide to Freeing Slaves and Changing the World (invert) (Paperback)
This book has shown me that there is something that kids can do to help the human trafficking.
After just the first chapter, I was awakened to the needs in this world. because I didn't really know how much human slave trafficking is going on in this world. Zach Hunter ( the author) asks you what do you think you can do. And at the end of every chapter there is a place where the author asks you questions and recommends Bible passages.
This is a book that is perfect for people 12 and up.
By the way, I am 12 and I think the book is very interesting and very God oriented.
Truly a book that could change this teenage generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be "changed", August 8, 2007
By
This review is from: Be the Change: Your Guide to Freeing Slaves and Changing the World (invert) (Paperback)
Zach Hunter's youthful writing style brings home a very real and timely point to all. Is does not take "Age" to make a difference in this world, only passion and a committment to see your vision through to the end.

Zach's book speaks to adults as well as teens. So far I have purchased, read and given away three copies of this book, including one to my 12 year old daughter. Every person I have spoken to about this book has been impressed, and many have gone on to buy a copy for themselves and/or their own teenager.

This is a great selection for a teen or adult book study group.

Never has such a bold message flowed with such simple power. Zach will change your life but more importantly it will change the lives of the hundreds of thousands of slaves living in despair. This is an easy-to-read and easy-to-live message filled with quotes, testimonies, and straight up wisdom from 15year old. Zach is one of my new heroes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, November 19, 2008
This review is from: Be the Change: Your Guide to Freeing Slaves and Changing the World (invert) (Paperback)
In a world where it seems that no one champions cause of those who cannot speak for themselves, Zach Hunter steps up to the plate and delivers an issue that we may perceive as being a part of the past. The book is an easy, well spoken read that challenges you to take a step out and speak up for those who cannot. It is a guide book that entails how you can help and how we all can defend our fellow brothers and sisters in the world. Indeed, we can all be the change...Kudos Zach!

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful message for our generation, June 13, 2007
This review is from: Be the Change: Your Guide to Freeing Slaves and Changing the World (invert) (Paperback)
As teen myself, with a heart to challenge my generation to excellence, Zach Hunter is a warmly-welcomed voice of vision, maturity, and biblical truth. His book speaks to his peers right where they are, and inspires them higher.

To the previous reviewer: Zach has demonstrated the ability to work with others to accomplish social good without compromising the convictions that motivate him to act. That is to be commended, not criticized.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be The Change, July 13, 2011
This review is from: Be the Change: Your Guide to Freeing Slaves and Changing the World (invert) (Paperback)
I recently read a book by Zach Hunter called "Be the Change" it is as the subtitle reads "Your guide to freeing slaves and changing the world" but it is also much more: every chapter has a main character quality that is focused on in that chapter such as courage, compassion or leadership and then several stories of people who put that certain quality to good use in their lives; in the chapter titled "Compassion" he profiled the orphanage builder George Muller and the Nobel prize winning Mother Teresa. The main purpose of this book is of course to help free modern day slavery but I found that it was helpful to me just as a teenager looking for ways that I could try to make a difference. That's the second part of the subtitle "Changing the world" and as Zach mentioned earlier in his book it's kind of hard to help free slaves without changing the world and if you help change the world by telling people about the only person who can bring true freedom, pretty soon you will find that many of the world's problems (including slavery) will be solved. Probably one of my favorite quotes from the book (and there were many good ones) was by Martin Niemoller, a German leader of the Confessing Church who was held in a Nazi concentration camp from 1937 to 1945. After he was released he wrote this poem about the need to stand against evil:
"First they came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time
there was no one left to speak up for me."

I thought that that summed up the reasons of why we should take a stand for what is right and fight against what we know to be evil.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make a difference in their life, family, community or even the world. One of the really cool things about this book was the fact that it was written by a 15 year old- and I kept forgetting it because it was so well written!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Challenge, June 21, 2010

This review is from: Be the Change: Your Guide to Freeing Slaves and Changing the World (invert) (Paperback)
Zach Hunter is extraordinarily ordinary and passionate to see modern day slavery ended. I'll admit, much of the book reads like a long book report, but he does collect a lot of inspirational stories of heroes of old. The book contains a challenge and a battle cry: Be the change. In other words, stand up for the oppressed.

His organization, Loose Change to Loosen Change, raised money for other organizations that are fighting the front-line fight against slavery. The organization also seeks to raise awareness about the existence of modern day slavery.

It's geared toward students, so the language is definitely casual, but it does contain some good discussion questions.

4.0 out of 5 stars inspiring teen!, November 9, 2010

What an inspiring young man. I am a youth leader and read this to get a teenage perspective of things so I can help encourage those in the youth group to knowing that they have the ability to do something in this world no matter how old they are. He has sections after each chapter where there are questions with room to write answers to help getting those ideas flowing. I think this is a great book for any young person who is in need of inspiration to be a difference in their own communities and the world.
