Book Description

The BE Series Commentary September 20, 1988

Oh, to be like Him--sympathetic, reaching out to others in distress!

Jesus called Himself "the Son of man." He showed compassion toward all kinds of people . . . the sinful . . . the rejected . . . the brokenhearted . . . men and women . . . little children. The hopeless and the helpless looked to Him, and He never failed to meet their needs. As you study Dr. Luke's record of the Great Physician, Jesus Christ, you will better understand God's compassion and thereby be motivated to a greater degree to show loving concern for others . . . and to do what you can in God's power to help them in their distress. As never before, Dr. Wiersbe believes, God is calling His people to BE COMPASSIONATE

"Pity is a depressant," wrote the eccentric philosopher Friedrich Nietzche. "A man loses power when he pities."

Nietzche went mad in the year Adolph Hitler was born, but Hitler carried on that philosophy. He despised other people and stood apart from them. He especially despised the weak and the handicapped, and he developed programs for exterminating them. Robert Payne wrote, "Even on festive occasions he remained singularly alone, the flow of emotion ceasing abruptly when it came in contact with him. . . . He demanded for himself an immunity from people" (The Life and Death of Adolph Hitler, Praeger, p. 461). What a contrast to Jesus Christ, the compassionate Son of Man! In his Gospel, Dr. Luke describes our Lord as one who mingled with people, including publicans and sinners, and who shared the burdens of the afflicted and the weak. Jesus has proved conclusively that pity is a sign of strength, not of weakness; and that God's power flows through loving hearts.

I think it was George Bernard Shaw who said that if the other planets are inhabited, they must be using the earth as their insane asylum. Our world is filled with hurting people who need a loving touch and a word of encouragement. Jesus has put His people here to let the world know that He cares. His command to us is, "Be compassionate!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful & Interesting, September 24, 2010

Debbie (Harrison, AR United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
"BE Compassionate" is a commentary on chapters 1-13 of Luke, but it's written more like a Bible study than a Bible reference book. As in, you could go to a certain chapter and verse reference and read the entry for more information, but the book was designed to be read from start to finish. The book was easy to understand and an enjoyable, quick read.

With one exception, each chapter in the book covered one chapter in Luke. The author pointed out the meanings of Greek words that don't fully translate into English and background historical information that helped to bring out the full impact of the verses. There were 9 to 11 questions at the end of each chapter. Some tested to see if you remembered/understood what the author had said, but others were discussion/reflection questions about how you could apply what you had just learned.

This study made me think, and I gained a lot of new insights from reading it. I didn't agree with a few of the author's conclusions, but I'm not claiming that they're wrong. I've just heard a different spin put on the events that seems to fit better, in my opinion. Overall, I'd highly recommend this book as a Bible study for those who want a deeper understanding of the Word.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Background to Biblical Readings, August 8, 2010
By
Every Christmas Eve, our family reads the story of the birth of Christ from Luke chapter 2. Many Christian families do. For this reason, it is likely one of the most read books of the Bible. And yet, how much do we actually know about Luke, about his service to our Lord, and about Luke's contributions to the Biblical account of Jesus' coming, His works, His death, and His resurrection?

Dr. Wiersbe's Be Compassionate is a detailed look at the first thirteen chapters of Luke through which he encourages the reader to understand and experience Jesus' compassion and to learn to be compassionate to others.

Dr. Wiersbe's book provides detailed information on the history and customs of the time, background on the characters in the chapters, and commentary on the language and its importance to the meaning of the passages. It makes for fascinatingreading. For an informative Bible Study, read the suggested verses from the Bible and then delve into the commentary. The questions for personal reflection or group discussion at the end of each chapter help to solidify the reader's understanding of the Biblical passages in light of the commentary and are a useful addition to the book and to the reader's study of the book of Luke.

I received this book from B & B Media Group in exchange for my honest review. The thoughts printed in this review are entirely my own.
