5.0 out of 5 stars Worth going to Japan for, April 19, 2004
This review is from: To Be Continued (Audio CD)
This music is now about 20 years old and it's unique place in the development of fusion and jazz is more clear than ever.

It's a trio with Rypdal on guitar, Vitous on double bass and Jack DeJohnette's amazing drums. But it's a good step outside the guitar trio tradition. It's a Strat, not a Gibson. These guys are coming out of electric Miles and Weather Report, not Jim Hall and Bill Evans.

"Maya" alone is worth the price. Vitou's "Mountain in the Clouds" has the same feel, haunting, intelligent, but with the kind of energy and drive you get when the drummer steps out of the box.
Consider this if you like Rypdal or want a place to start or if you love DeJohnett's drumming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent Jazz Inspired By Nature, August 14, 2004

This review is from: To Be Continued (Audio CD)
This is difficult music to catagorize but Avant-Garde - Fusion
- Post-Bop Inspired By Nature is the best description I can think of at the moment. If you can imagine an avant-garde artist painting a mountain lake hidden by mist then you have an idea of what the music sounds like.

The guitar solos by Rypdal are haunting and free flowing. Dejohnette's crisp drums on this music are the best I've ever heard from him. Miroslav Vitous played accustic and electric bass with Weather Report and is totally masterful on this album.

This particular CD is becoming VERY difficult to find but well worth the effort and the price. It will most likely become an expensive collector's CD.

The prelude CD to this one, simply called "Rypdal, Vituos, DeJohnette" is also a masterpiece in a similar vein but a little easier to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top-Notch Musicianship!, February 7, 2008
This review is from: To Be Continued (Audio CD)
The opening track "Maya" is one of the most beautiful of all of Terje's pieces and worth the price all by itself, even if there weren't other great tracks here (and there are). This was the second Rypdal-DeJohnette-Vitous collaboration, and both are superb examples of how musicianship triumphs over ego in a trio setting when musicians of this calibre and sensitivity work together. I personally like "To Be Continued" more than the first collaboration (titled merely "Rypdal/Vitous/DeJohnette"), but both are amazing. The DVD of Rypdal with Vitous and Trilok Gurtu (of a German concert from 1994) is also worth getting.
