I have to be honest and admit I was prepared to be annoyed by this book. I'm afraid anytime someone seems to be breezily pulling off what pretty much all of us would like to do - in this case, achieving independence from traditional jobby jobs - we want there to be some catch: either a dirty trick up her sleeve, or at least some good reason to hate her.

But, in fact, I dug this book and its author's voice, in virtually every section. It's a blast to read - witty, funny, and breezy, as well as grabby and well-organised with lots of mini-case studies and tips broken out - and profoundly insightful and most especially inspiring. As with Tim Ferriss's The 4-Hour Work Week (with which this book will inevitably invite comparisons), even if you don't follow a single specific tip, it's probably worth reading just to massively expand your sense of the possible.

And possibility is powerful mojo. Highly recommended.

I have been reading books on launching businesses for over a decade, and this book finally adds something new to the space. Not only does it include case studies of real people without piles of cash to invest in a startup, but it is full of incredibly practical tips and advice. It's the first book that has provided a concrete process to follow instead of just inspirational stories. As a bonus, Marianne has included a large number of private links to her website that contain additional information, handouts, audios and videos. I am happy to say that I own this book in paperback, ebook and audio, so I always have it with me. I'm on my way to putting it to practice by the beginning of summer. Hurray for free ranging!

This book is dangerous... in the best sense of the word. If your life and career have been built upon conventional wisdom, reading this book may subject your life to major upheaval.

But if you relish rejecting the status quo - as I do - then this book is for you.

Case in point: as a business owner, I escaped the "Career Cage" almost 20 years ago. But in the years that followed, I built a Career Cage for dozens of employees and in a way, I caged myself. This book was a godsend as I took my business through a major transition. The process, insights and empowering advice in this book helped inspire me to get back to what matters most: freedom and fulfillment.

"More and more people are discovering that life no longer has to be a choice between 'trapped and well-off' versus 'free and broke.'"

"You're not building a business, you're creating a life."

Refreshing, candid, inspiring and practical. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a great primer for people who are considering stepping out of the corporate world, the traditional career ladder and aiming to make a living doing something they love. You can still earn good money but the focus is more on life wealth, on how you spend your short time on the planet. Marianne walks the talk, living the free-range life, so she is the perfect guide to this way of life. I particularly think the section on "creating your free range life" is important for people to consider when deciding on a business. Do you really know what you want? Or are you using the metrics that you have been taught to use? Being the person you "should" be or who you really are?
Inspirational and useful as a way to consider your next steps towards your future.

My default reaction to self-help, improve-your-life/job/marriage/happiness-in-5-steps, kind of books is to roll my eyes and walk away. I read them only if a trusted friend endorses them, and then, only in private, or with a huge paper bag over my head if in public. This one came highly recommended by a dear friend and within a few pages I was hooked. Cantwell does several things very well:

-Her conversational tone is encouraging, relatable and motivating.
-She shares her own journey in a way that makes you want to read more, hear more and start your own adventure living differently.
-Practical, introspective exercises with a clear beginning and goal accompany her anecdotes (Yes, the kind of reflective, pen to paper activities that make you think-- noooooo, not a silly brainstorming exercise-- for about 30 seconds. Then, before you know it, that resistance lifts and little and big insights start to emerge.)
-She includes case studies of other people, who you can actually track down online, who have made their free range way in life.

If you are looking for pragmatic advice on how to really figure out what you want to do besides your current job, how to actually test the waters with ideas before bailing, and what you can do (today) to cultivate serious enthusiasm and courage for making a change, get a hold of this read.

A great book on how anyone can take advantage of the opportunities the internet gives us to build a lifestyle business doing something they love and working from anywhere. This is very much in the same spirit as Never Work Again by Erlend Bakke (which is particularly good on outsourcing) and I would recommend both to anyone who wants to escape the 9 to 5 grind.

Love this book so much. Honestly cannot recommend it enough to anyone thinking of starting their own business - whether for a total life change or just a passion project on the side. I read this for the first time in Feb 2013 and by April had quit my job, moved to another city and by May had started my own business. If you are reading all of these reviews it's probably because you are thinking of making the jump - get the book, you won't regret it. Fiona Triaca
