4.0 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Rocker, May 25, 2001

Those who missed the first British Invasion (1964) might very well be enthusiastic with the Second Invasion from the mid-nineteen nineties. Well, not really an invasion, but sort of a Brit-Pop revival. The Wannadies are a Swedish group, and Be A Girl features the finest traits of the Beatles and a dozen other sound-alike bands. For catchy sing-along melodies with cheery lyrics, "You and Me Song," "Love In June," "Do It All the Time" and "Kid" are impressive. The Wannadies' vocal harmonies are simply delightful (You and Me Song, Might Be Stars, Love In June). At the core of the Wannadies' music may be Sunny Pop, but the band can also knockdown some intense rockers with screaming guitar chords (How Does It Feel?), pounding bass lines (New Word Record), and a crashing drum kit (Sweet Nymphet).

I have one minor qualm with the band: I would have preferred that the voice of Christina Bergmark (the lone female) had been more prominent in the mix. Better yet, how about a solo ballad?

Still, Be A Girl is a gorgeous rocker.

Note: The Japanese import includes an additional track (Let Go Oh Oh).
