Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Be Good was nominated for Best Traditional R&B Performance in the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. Since his Grammy nominated solo debut Water in May 2010, Gregory Porter has rocketed from talented unknown to one of the most relevant and virtuosic vocalists on the international jazz scene today.

Gregory Porter has most of what you want in a male
jazz singer, and maybe a thing or two you didn t know
you wanted. --New York Times

The intersection of Kurt Elling and Sammy Davis Jr.
may seem an unfathomable junction, but that s exactly
where you ll find Gregory Porter. --JazzTimes

An absolute showstopper of personalized soul. --All Music Guide

Five SUPERB Stars! Grammy-nominated jazz singer, composer Gregory Porter deals up a great sophomore recording that justifies the huge buzz in the jazz world created by his Grammy-nominated debut recording Water, his worldwide live appearances, and emergence on the international jazz polls. Bolstered by excellent sidemen: Tivon Pennicott, Yosuke Sato, and Kamau Kenyatta (also horn arranger) on saxophones, Keyon Harrold on brass, Chip Crawford on piano, bassist Aaron James, and Emanuel Harrold on drums, "Be Good" gives us engaging ballads, uptempo swingers, and mellow gospel-tinged message songs, such as the 'colors of life' in the powerful but tender "Painted on Canvas" and the excellent jazz waltz "Be Good (Lion's Song)". The beautiful, rarely-heard movie theme "Imitation of Life" gets a tender piano/voice treatment. The gospel-tinged "Mother's Song" has a powerful familial message. The hard-swinging "Bling Bling" has great uptempo scatting by Porter and a wild alto sax solo that is most impressive. "Real Good Hands" is a touching performance of a man asking parents for their daughter's hand. And perhaps best of all, Greg's powerful interpretation of Nat Adderley's classic "Work Song" gets one heck of a ride here with Porter's voice emoting those potent Oscar Brown Jr lyrics, aided by some inventive instrumental solos exploring Nat's chord changes through a dramatic arrangement. The 'a cappella' version of "God Bless the Child" is just a wonderful rendering with distinctive turns towards gospel and soul along the way, and the uplifting uptempo "On My Way To Harlem" is about things in life that change and other things that should never change.Read more ›

Best jazz/soul/grown-folks CD I've listened/exhaled to, in quite a while. Love seldom-sung standards, so "Imitation of Life" was my entree, followed by one of the best vocal versions of the oft-performed "Work Song" I can recall.
And while I enjoyed the nine originals on first-listen, it's ultimately these G.Porter-penned tunes that put this CD atop of my everyday playlist.

I do not buy albums often. I find Gregory Porter the best male jazz vocalist in years. The lyrics to his songs are as mature as his voice. This is a Fabulous album, Thank you Gregory Porter! I can't wait to see you in person someday soon!

I'm almost speechless. So unbelievably good. It's like he went back and got some old jazz and made it better. It doesn't seem like something new, just better.

Once again, future legend of jazz / pop vocals earns his spot with another Grammy worthy CD - "Be Good"!

Starting out with "Painted on Canvas" - a beautiful, wistful, arrangement where he pays tribute to the Harlem Renaissance artists in his lyrics and acknowledging the unique life journey we all have - "we are like children painted on canvases picking up shades as we go ... can I use the colors I choose ...". Sung with his tender, controlled restraint he delivers the message " ... admire the view ... we're just like children ...".

I have always loved hearing Gregory sing "Be Good" - " .. Lions are made for cages to look at in delight ... Be Good, Be Good ..." a relationship song, so smooth and whimsical yet with great poignancy he sings, "Does she know what she does when she dances around my cage ...?

When Gregory hits those deep baritone notes it is smooth, warm, and beautiful as it blends and supports his rich tenor voice.

"On My Way to Harlem" is a lively homage to the fabulous Harlem Renaissance with a take on that there are others following on their shoulders " ... you can't keep me away from where I was born I was baptized on my daddy's horn ...".

"Real Good Hands" is going to be played at engagement parties all over the world ... "Mama don't you worry about your daughter cause you're leaving her in real good hands, I'm a real good man ...." Fabulous!

What a beautiful homage to love and family, "Mother's Song", is a well song and written song for family reunions and a testament to strong mothers everywhere, "Listen and gather round me children, children of a mother whose life lifted up love ...".

I thoroughly enjoy this album. I was introduced to Gregory Porter and this album "by accident". Glad I stumbled upon this incredible recording. I listen to it at my desk from my home office and it places me in a good mood which subsequently helps to improve my productivity. Great musical quality, and the Brother has a voice very reminiscent of Donny Hathaway. I will support his musical efforts from here on out, consider me a fan.

Gifted by a friend, this is one of the best jazz vocal CDs I've heard in awhile. Organic, heart-felt and not over-produced, it gives one a much better sense of this artist than did his debut "Water (2010)". No smoke, mirrors, vocal acrobatics or Elling-isms...just some real music. Hopefully, this is just the tip of the iceberg...looking forward to future releases by this wonderful artist!
