Gregory Porter has most of what you want in a male
jazz singer, and maybe a thing or two you didn t know
you wanted. --New York Times

The intersection of Kurt Elling and Sammy Davis Jr.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREGORY PORTER PAINTS A SUPERB SONIC JAZZ PORTRAIT February 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Five SUPERB Stars! Grammy-nominated jazz singer, composer Gregory Porter deals up a great sophomore recording that justifies the huge buzz in the jazz world created by his Grammy-nominated debut recording Water, his worldwide live appearances, and emergence on the international jazz polls. Bolstered by excellent sidemen: Tivon Pennicott, Yosuke Sato, and Kamau Kenyatta (also horn arranger) on saxophones, Keyon Harrold on brass, Chip Crawford on piano, bassist Aaron James, and Emanuel Harrold on drums, "Be Good" gives us engaging ballads, uptempo swingers, and mellow gospel-tinged message songs, such as the 'colors of life' in the powerful but tender "Painted on Canvas" and the excellent jazz waltz "Be Good (Lion's Song)". The beautiful, rarely-heard movie theme "Imitation of Life" gets a tender piano/voice treatment. The gospel-tinged "Mother's Song" has a powerful familial message. The hard-swinging "Bling Bling" has great uptempo scatting by Porter and a wild alto sax solo that is most impressive. "Real Good Hands" is a touching performance of a man asking parents for their daughter's hand. And perhaps best of all, Greg's powerful interpretation of Nat Adderley's classic "Work Song" gets one heck of a ride here with Porter's voice emoting those potent Oscar Brown Jr lyrics, aided by some inventive instrumental solos exploring Nat's chord changes through a dramatic arrangement. The 'a cappella' version of "God Bless the Child" is just a wonderful rendering with distinctive turns towards gospel and soul along the way, and the uplifting uptempo "On My Way To Harlem" is about things in life that change and other things that should never change. With each listen, these attractive songs and performances reveal more beauty and detail about the booming artistry of jazz singer Gregory Porter, his cohorts, and the care that went into production of this excellent vocal/instrumental recording and it is Highly Recommended. Five DISTINCTIVE Stars!! (This review is based on an mp3 download. 12 tracks; Time: ~62:03)

I do not buy albums often. I find Gregory Porter the best male jazz vocalist in years. The lyrics to his songs are as mature as his voice. This is a Fabulous album, Thank you Gregory Porter! I can't wait to see you in person someday soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars In real good hands, indeed! February 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Best jazz/soul/grown-folks CD I've listened/exhaled to, in quite a while. Love seldom-sung standards, so "Imitation of Life" was my entree, followed by one of the best vocal versions of the oft-performed "Work Song" I can recall.
And while I enjoyed the nine originals on first-listen, it's ultimately these G.Porter-penned tunes that put this CD atop of my everyday playlist.

GP's voice and meter complement the lyrics perfectly. I had wanted some good jazzy blue songs to listen to and heard Mr. Porter on a podcast. I am so glad I purchased!
