Book Description

May 1, 2005
Ten-year-old David is a regular kid except for one thing: He has AspergerÂ’s Syndrome. Written from DavidÂ’s point of view, this charming book uses playful illustrations and kid-friendly text to tell young readers what itÂ’s like to have AspergerÂ’s Syndrome. David explains that heÂ’s a little clumsy, he has trouble making friends, and sometimes he canÂ’t figure out how to carry on a normal conversation. But David wants to have friends, and with the help of his teacher and his parents, he gives the kids in his class some very helpful tips about what they can do to help a classmate with AspergerÂ’s Syndrome. After learning about AspergerÂ’s Syndrome, the other kids realize that DavidÂ’s not weird, just a little different. And David doesnÂ’t have to play alone anymore.

This review is from: To Be Me: Understanding What It's Like to Have Asperger's Syndrome (Hardcover)
To Be Me has been such an incredible gift to my son's classroom... the effects of providing such an warm, beautifully written and illustrated book have been amazing. Since I bought it and gave it to my son's teacher, the children have really seemed to understand his Asperger's a little bit better. They have even have been behaving a little bit more like compassionate people. This book is so important for teachers and for students, I strongly recommend buying a copy to share with others.

This review is from: To Be Me: Understanding What It's Like to Have Asperger's Syndrome (Hardcover)
To Be Me sets itself apart from other books of this subject because it truly talks to children. The narrator of the book is another child, making this book inviting, comfortable, and fun for kids and adults. Children with Asperger's Syndrome as well as classmates, friends, parents, teachers, doctors, and all readers can be touched by the book's wonderful illustrations, verbiage, and overall positive message.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Staff Favorite!, January 17, 2007
This review is from: To Be Me: Understanding What It's Like to Have Asperger's Syndrome (Hardcover)
This colorfully illustrated book is about a boy named David, who has Asperger Syndrome (AS). Told from David's point of view, the story focuses on his social difficulties, as he struggles to fit in with his classmates at school. After receiving a diagnosis of AS, David begins to understand his own differences and the differences of others, and he learns to accept himself. He also describes his own unique characteristics, and he provides helpful tips for typical students who have classmates with AS. We absolutely love this book, and we recommend it frequently to our customers. The artwork is fantastic and the story is very engaging.
