4.0 out of 5 stars delightful second chance at love, October 12, 2004
This review is from: To Be a Mother: Single Father (Harlequin Superromance No. 1233) (Mass Market Paperback)
Colorado State University students Nick Kincaid and Samantha Bretton fall in love. When she becomes pregnant, he offers to marry her, but her parents especially her mother pressure the seventeen years old into refusing. She gives birth, but is heartbroken and unable to look at their child. Nick assumes she is just selfish.

Thirteen years later in Idaho, Sam learns her cancer is in remission. She needs to see her daughter and sends a pleading letter to Nick who raised Jessica by himself. Jessica calls her birth mother to invite her to come see her in Grand Teton National park where she lives. Though afraid, Sam agrees to come, but fears how Nick will act towards her while knowing that her only regret in life was not marrying him when he proposed when she was a teen.

The return to Grand Teton (see WOMAN IN HIDING) is a fine affair as readers will feel the high level of angst between Sam and Nick while worrying how their relationship will impact in the way too precocious Jess. The story line is loaded with tension as their past, present, and future converges within Sam. Fans will appreciate this second chance at love orchestrated by the lead couple's daughter who wants her parents together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Superromance Ever!, October 8, 2004
This review is from: To Be a Mother: Single Father (Harlequin Superromance No. 1233) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was really surprised to find out the heroine has been battling cancer. The twist in this story is remarkable. Having given up her baby at 17, she never expects to see the child. But because she's a cancer survivor, she's advised to resolve any problem in her past that has brought her stess in the hope that she will stay in remission. The hero kept their baby to raise. Now Jessica is 13 and he has just received a phone call from her mother. She wants to see Jessica, if it's okay with him. Wow. The story takes off from there. I laughed and cried all the way through it. A keeper if there ever was one.

I take into consideration the author's way of writing and find this an excellent story.
Having met Nick in WOMAN IN HIDING - I was happy to follow his story along with his daughter.
Samantha understandably at not quite 17 and still in High School is prevailed upon by her parents to give up her child.

Nick, at 20 is still in college, but wants very much to marry Sam. And raise their baby. He warns her that if she gives up the child he will sue for full custody. Which he does.

He has spent 13 years raising his daughter. The last 8 years he has been at the Grand Teton National Park as their biologist.
He and Jessica have become very close friends with Chief Ranger Pierce Gallagher and his son, Cory. And especially so since Pierce lost his wife.

Now Samantha Bretton wants to at least see the daughter that she gave up. And she does ask Nick for permission. Trying to tie up the loose ends of her life since battling with cancer. She has found out that life carries no guarentees of happily ever after.

Nick does not want to let Sam back into their life but he bases his decision on the good to his daughter. Therein lies a lot of confusion and attraction and his fear of another rejection.

He has a number of talks with Pierce. As he had been there for Pierce and his emotional trauma.

Sam comes up with a way to balance their lives together [she is a lawyer which the Park needs] but [to me] she seems to be a screwy individual. [too emotional, or paranoid to suit me]
Still the story was pretty decent - just not overly exciting.

Definitely recommended - don't know if it is a keeper for most readers, but it is worth reading.
