Lullacry has managed to make an almost perfect sound that other less talented bands who receive radio airtime can't quite hit. Be My God is a masterpiece. This cd is a perfect combination of the foreign metal/hard rock style of great bands such as Helloween and Lacuna Coil with beautiful female vocals. What sets Tanya apart from those pansy lillith fair girls who you hear on the radio is her ability to do metal worthy singing. Her vocal style would make Dio and Bruce Dickinson proud. I'm shocked, considering the popularity of Evanescence or growing popularity of Lacuna Coil, that Century Media hasn't marketed these guys(and girl) better. An absolute must own for fans of metal.

I'll start off by saying I really like Tanya's voice, something a lot of people seem to have a bit of a problem with. Although her voice doesn't match the power of Lullacry's new singer, Tanja, she has a lot of potential.

I found out about Lullacry through the mail order forms Century Media loves to put in their bands CDs. Looking back having judged from the cover alone, I don't think I would do it again. Just one look at the pictures in the booklet and you'll quickly learn that this band takes themselves much too seriously. Take the quote they put in the booklet, "This is Heavy Rock so play it loud!" Notice they didn't put Hard Rock, they obviously felt they needed the Heavy instead. This CD isn't heavy, and if it was you'd never be able to tell because they put Tanya's voice before the music. Maybe if they'd balance it out people wouldn't criticize her voice so much.

There's one thing Lullacry has a hard time with, then and now, their lyrics aren't very good. There are times where they show some depth but then the lyrics just get incredibly corny ("Just like the dream without the dreamer", not a very good lyric). Then there's the lack of memorable moments, Into Your Heart is the only exception. Pain, Walk With Me has excellent verses (vocally) yet lackluster choruses. Damn You shows a rebel side to the band and has a pretty good chorus, but still feels incomplete. Now I've heard people say that Tanya's voice doesn't 'soar' like they think it should in Firequeen but I'd beg to differ. Quite the contrary in my eyes actually. Firequeen, next to Into Your Heart, is the only other remarkable track on this CD. So I don't know if that's just me or what, but judge for yourself.

My favorite songs are Be My God, Into Your Heart, Pain, Walk With Me, and Firequeen. Lullacry is, ultimately, a hit or miss band. When they hit, it's great music. But when they miss, it's nothing to write home about. I'm not disrespecting the band in any way but I think if they would've given Tanya the chance to do one more CD, she would've proved her worth. I do like the new lineup a bit more, but you gotta give credit, they did what they could on this release.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great... but not perfect, May 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Be My God (Audio CD)
I play this CD a lot, and I love it, but I wouldn't label it as perfect.

Here's why.

Tanya's vocals are strong, but sometimes I think her voice does not suit some of the songs on this album. For example, in "Firequeen" her voice does not soar as much as I think it should.

The pictures. I don't concentrate on image for music I like, but the pictures were very... how shall I put this... strange. It was like the pictures were one big joke... they make me either cringe or laugh; they are so... I wouldn't say hideous, but just plain strange.

All in all, this album is not as good as their latest, "Crucify my Heart", but still satisfying. It's well worth your money, so buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing CD!, March 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Be My God (Audio CD)
With their 2nd album Be My God, Finland's Lullacry have shown that they can write great hard rock with amazing melodies in their songs. Tanya is a vocalist who has a powerfull voice with terrific vocal harmonies. The reason I bought this album is because I love bands with female singers in them. the reason that I give this album five stars is because it is very consistent and in some ways better than their debut cd. Lullacry is able to write songs that have enough hooks to keep me listening to them over and over. For anyone who likes this type of music I would highly recommend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a find! Incredibly catchy and nicely produced..., March 24, 2002

I read a lot of metal magazines. And I buy more CDs per month than most disc shops do to stock their shelves. So I suppose it was only a matter of time before I crossed paths with Lullacry.

I'm just darn glad it was sooner than later. This Finnish band is unbelievably good.

For the record, I saw an article on Lullacry in the latest issue of a popular Canadian metal magazine, saw a photo of the cover of their latest CD and immediately set out to find a copy of Lullacry's latest, Be My God. I figured any metal band with a lead singer that bears a resemblance to Pamela Anderson has to be checked out.

Hey, I'm not really that shallow. It just so happens that most of my favorite bands of late are fronted by nice looking women with stellar voices (After Forever, Nightwish, Edenbridge, Tristania, The Gathering, Chalice, Mostly Autumn, The Sins of Thy Beloved, etc.). So I wondered where Lullacry fit into the musical spectrum.

To say that Lullacry surprised me is to put it mildly. I'm blown away. The songs are upbeat, catchy, melodic and not at all "Beauty & Beast" or operatic. It's straight-ahead melodic metal with a nice crunchy guitar and driving, often slippery, bassline. I've been trying to put a label on Tanya's voice and I can't quite do it. It's powerful, but higher than, say, Doro's. It doesn't have the range of a Pat Benatar, but it's got that sexiness and power both possess. There's even a bit of Alanis Morissette or Sheryl Crow in Tanya's cocky, sensual, modern-day female singer delivery.

To be honest, I have a hard time picturing this incredibly good voice coming out of the blonde bombshell on the cover of Be My God. I expected there to be an inverse relationship between the size of her chest and the strength of her voice.

How wrong I was!

Be My God, according to Lullacry's web site, is the band's second CD. Their first, Sweet Desire (1999), is apparently out of print. I can't find it anywhere. (Being the music nut that I am, I'll keep searching until I do turn up a copy...)

Be My God is full of big, brash, in-your-face guitar riffs -- none of which cross the line that most metal guitarists cross today. This isn't atonal or dissonant. This is hook-filled power metal the likes of which I haven't heard in a while. I'd love to see this band in concert!

Not likely, since they spend most of their time in Europe. And I'm rather American-bound.

Oh well. Until I can feast my eyes and ears on Lullacry live, I'll content myself with this tasty 11-track CD of melodic power metal. I suggest you do the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars be my goddess, January 5, 2003

A previous reviewer states that singer Tanya bears a passing resemblance to Pam Anderson-- true, and I'm afraid Ms Anderson comes in second in the looks contest. As for the music, this is a nice meaty slab of metal that should satisfy the palate of any metalhead. It is my belief that European bands can stomp all over their American counterparts talent-wise, and this album does nothing to dispel that belief. Tanya has sufficient power and vocal range to soar above the crunch and grind of the guitars, and I don't think there is one bad track on the album. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because they don't take enough chances (at least, in my opinion). I definitely look forward to their next album, though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great Finnish band!, November 4, 2001

This is more "hard rock" than "heavy metal" but should appeal to anyone who likes crunching guitars with big riffs and ballsy singing. The music is very catchy and Tanya has a great voice that fits the music perfectly. Her singing isn't pretty like that of Tarja from Nightwish, it is more like a huskier version of Kimberly Goss from Sinergy. While Lullacry are sometimes compared to Sentenced, Sinergy is probably the better example.
These songs aren't complex, but they will stick in your head quickly, and force you to play the CD again and again to scratch the itch they create. My favorites are "Embrace Me," the title song, "Pain Walk with Me," and "Thorn of the Rose," but really, they are all good. I can't wait to get their first CD from a friend in Finland in a few weeks. Hopefully Century Media will license that one too, for those who don't have contacts overseas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Turn it on and rock out!, August 12, 2006
This review is from: Be My God (Audio CD)
Not quite what I was expecting, but very enjoyable. I was expecting something like Lacuna Coil. But I would compare this sound more to, say, Doro Pesch. It's the first album I've bought in a while that I have rocked out to thoroughly. Play it loud!

What a cheesy looking album!! The singer is good looking, but why have her hunched over on the cover apparently giving the bird while showing her cleavage? And the photos on the inside are laughably atrocious. Anyway, artwork aside, the music is mostly enjoyable. They take the run-of-the-mill gothic/darkwave formula, you know, Lacuna Coil, Gathering, Flowing Tears, etc, and put a sharp pop-influenced vocal edge to it. Basically, they can take any part of any song on this album (vocals, guitars, solos, drums) and interchange that with any other song, and still be consistent. Normally I would sentence a band to hell for doing this, but some of the songs are just too damn catchy to ignore. The singing is powerful, the dual guitar work is heavy and harmonious, and even though, admittedly, its approach is too often formulaic, I dig this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The cover only tells part of the story., February 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Be My God (Audio CD)
... Needless to say I was not disappointed. The opening riffs on Embrace Me had me hooked and Tanya's voice only added to attraction... Here was a Finnish band that was writing incredibly catchy songs that were not at all lame. They had the right amount of heaviness mixed with melodic hooks and pretty good drumming to boot. The songs pretty much fall into the middle ground between Nightwish and The Gathering. Tanya's vocals are the main story with Lullacry though, as they adds so much to each song especially Firequeen, which is my favorite. The musicianship is also tight. So for those of you not into the craziness of most Scandinavian bands but looking for something more, this album is for you.
