The why and how of being genuinely nice,
This review is from: Be Nice (Or Else!): and what's in it for you (Hardcover)
In a world where people are experiencing road rage, random outbursts of anger, and other problems, Winn Claybaugh cries out that it is time to stop. The change has to start with each one of us as individuals. Be nice and, as a result, be happy. Not only will you be happy, but others will also want to be around you because you make them feel happier. Being nice is good for everyone.
The ideas and suggestions in the book are not so esoteric as to be unrealistic. Instead it has practical examples of how to become a genuinely nice person. Basically it is an instructional book on how to make kindness a part of your everyday life. One of the important things at the beginning of the book is a definition of what a truly nice person is and is not. For example, a person who is nice to you but not nice to the waitress is not a genuinely nice person. The process is a step-by-step method for change. The first step is learning to be nice to your self. Next is boosting your self-esteem. You boost your self-esteem by creating balance in your life - professionally, physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. Be Nice (or Else) and What's In It For You is highly recommended for every reader.

I'm not much of a reader, but I just couldn't put this one down. Its a fast and easy read. This isn't the book for mean people who are trying to figure things out... this is a book for EVERYONE.
You walk away from this book with a new sense of self and simply happier. This book is better than Chicken Noodle Soup when you are sick. Its practical, yet actually thought provoking. Do yourself a favor, and a buy a few copies, cause once you read it, you'll want your friends to have a copy too. And when you are feeling down, you'll want to read it again.

BIG PAYOFF TO BEING NICE,

This review is from: Be Nice (Or Else!): and what's in it for you (Hardcover)
There is so much more to the book than the simple title, "Be Nice .. or Else" ... implies. The author takes the idea to the next level and expands it out in a way that everyone can see clearly how their life is affected by their "nice-ability" to everyone in their experience ... great success can be achieved by learning from the material in this book and using the simple practices in our every day lives. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is willing to realize more happiness and joy in their lives.

This is the best book. I think everyone, EVERYONE, should read it. I am a hairdresser, and wish I could get it for the other 16 people in my salon. I can't, so they can all read mine. This book gives you something to think about. It makes you think about how you are, in every day life, and how a few different things can change you or others. I reccommend this to EVERYONE.

Ever sit in a waiting area and start reading an article you can't put down? Be Nice or Else is just that type of reading material, just in book form. Sitting in the waiting area of Paul Mitchell The School in Provo, Utah, I picked up Winn Claybaugh's book and never put it down until I turned the last page. (OK, I had to take it home with me to finish....busted!). Winn Claybaugh has provided the answer to the question posed by many if not all types of business, especially in these hard economic times....."How do we cultivate and keep clients and retain a great staff?"
Covering all the bases....including concerns such as how do I begin, what happens if I mess up, what if I just don't feel nice, I'm just too overextended to be nice.....why is being nice that important, won't I just get walked all over if I am (gulp) just nice? In a fun to read, very relatable (Claybaugh helped start the Paul Mitchell School, but these principles can be used by any industry or individual) format, this book lays out a very easy and rewarding way to enhance your work and home life. Readers of this book are encouraged not just to be nice in the work place, but to carry niceness into their home lives and relationships. I found my self smiling and nodding in recognition as I read. While the idea of niceness seems a bit flimsy the actual practice can be empowering and far reaching. Not a saccharine, everything is rosy book, Be Nice or Else encourages the reader to adopt a "nice" lifestyle and offers real life examples and suggestions that readers will benefit from, and hopefully continue to spread. In a personal note....I loved seeing my constant reminder to my two children used as a book title...though my "OR else" was a bit more menacing. Oh, I am going to return the book.

PASS!,
By Walked Far (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Be Nice (Or Else!): and what's in it for you (Hardcover)
I wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, it left me disappointed and uninspired. The book is replete with 4th grade logic and unsupported conclusions. To be nice, Winn writes, you shouldn't point fingers at another person. Why not? Because there are three fingers pointing back at you. In the "Pass or Fail" discussion on being nice, Winn relates a story where he "yelled out to [the taxi] driver" for driving aggressively. "Quit driving like a maniac!" Yet in the following paragraph, Winn gave himself a "PASS!" because he had not verbally assaulted the driver. As one additional example of why this book disappoints, on the last page of the second of two chapters on being nice in the workplace, he concludes that "Bottom line, these two chapters prove that by adopting a BE NICE culture, a company will make more money." I read those chapters and no where before that statement does he correlate being nice with making more money.
The book is not a complete failure. There are recommendations and ideas worthy of thought and action, such as sending lots of notes and cards and performing random acts of kindness everyday. However, they are few and far in between the long paragraphs of self promotion and the sound of Winn patting himself on the back for being nice. The powerful resources for purchase Winn lists at the end of the book, for those "committed to being nice", are all from Winn, either directly or indirectly. I give myself a PASS! for this review of Be Nice (Or Else!)

I wanted to hate this book... seriously. I can be as cynical as they come. BUT, it actually had me smiling and laughing out loud as I read it. It was a real eye-opener into the human mind and how we tend to operate. Since reading this book, I have made it my daily mission to "Be Nice" to everyone I encounter, starting with myself. As a rule of thumb, motivational speakers are super corny. Winn Claybaugh has somehow managed to win me over with this silly little book, and made me want to be a better person. Read this book!
