Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Dude, how much would it stink if you died right now? If you, like, got whacked in the head by a foul ball at a Yankee game? Or if you ate too many apples, cherries and peaches, and OD’d on pesticides? Journalist Heckscher wants to make sure these kinds of disasters don’t happen, and has therefore penned this informative, addictive guide to 100 everyday threats. The safest seat at a major league baseball game is directly behind the backstop, under the protective screen. If you want to eat fruit, go with pineapple—its thick skin keeps it safe from pesticides, bugs and surface bacteria. A hypochondriac’s dream come true, the book reveals how to avoid dangers at home (which sleeping position is best, which lawn mower is least dangerous), in the kitchen (how long to keep leftovers, what kind of cutting board is safest), while travelling (where’s the best place to pitch a tent, which room in a hotel is easiest to evacuate) and more. For all its apparent silliness, however, the book is actually a trove of useful advice; it’s bound to remind all readers that they’re "better safe than sorry."

5.0 out of 5 stars Relevant and Charming, December 18, 2004
This review is from: Be Safe! (Hardcover)
This book is brimming with tons of useful and eye-opening tips that channel the hypochondriac in everyone. The author has done an exhaustive amount of research on the hazards of our day to day choices--many of which I have never even thought twice about. The mini packaging makes it an adorable and handy gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Holidays, October 24, 2004
This review is from: Be Safe! (Hardcover)
Looking for a perfect Holiday gift? This is it. Small and compact but with so much info and fun to read. I now know what to get my college age relatives as well as a gift for the person who has everything. I hope it is the beginning of a series because there is more to Be Safe about than just one book.

WHY? Contrary to those old wives' tales, sitting too close to the television won't permanently damage your eyesight or expose you to radiation; it may, however, cause temporary eye fatigue and eye-strain (which can usually be relieved by a good night's sleep). Read the first page
