Book Description

November 20, 2004 To Be A
Comprised of smart, highly adaptable men and women, the Marine Corps serves as the aggressive tip of the U.S. military spear. Theirs is a smaller, more dynamic force than any other in the American arsenal, and the only forward-deployed force designed for expeditionary operations by air, land, or sea. It is their size and expertise that allow them to move faster. Working to overcome disadvantage and turn conflict into victory, they accomplish great things, and they do so together. In the Marine Corps, there is a motto that describes their commitment to each other, their organization, and their country. It is Semper Fidelis or "Semper Fi." Translated from Latin, it means "Always Faithful."- Superb full-color action photos- Behind the scenes look at the training and structure- Next book in the colorful and successful series covering America's military forces- Still one of America's most combat efficient forcesFeatures:Chronological photographic displays, with personal stories, of a class of recruits as they progress through Marine recruit training.Steve Tomajczyk gains unprecedented access to the men in training around the country, including California, North Carolina, Virginia, and Okinawa.Superb full-color action photos.Author Steve Tomajczyk takes you through Marine recruit training - "Boot Camp" - the 13-week process that transforms a young person with the courage to succeed into a mature, highly disciplined, and fully capable Marine. During this time drill instructors teach individuals how to care for themselves and others, function as a member of a team and to achieve success together. Training includes first aid, water survival skills, marksmanship, tactics and other related topics. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent detail about USMC Boot Camp, May 12, 2007
This review is from: To Be a U.S. Marine (To Be a) (Paperback)
As a poolee's mom, I took away from this book not only information about the Marine Corp and boot camp that will help me understand what he will go through but also increased pride in what he will become. Must reading for parents of future Marines!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, May 29, 2005
This review is from: To Be a U.S. Marine (To Be a) (Paperback)
This has to be one of the most impressive books on the United States Marine Corps that I have read to date. The photographic images are a true depiction of how our sons and daughters are taken and molded into one the the finest fighting forces our country has today.

I was actually surprised to find my own son included in the photographic documentation of a group of recruits going through basic training at Parris Island. This books stirred many memories of what I went through while my son was training to become a Marine.

I would highly recommend this book to any person who is considering becoming a Marine as I would also do for the families of recruits or Marines.

This review is from: To Be a U.S. Marine (To Be a) (Paperback)
My husband is completely engrossed in this book right now because he will be starting basic training soon. It's comforting to have a peek at bootcamp life before he goes- not just for him, but for me as well.
