Book Description

11 and up6 and up
In the past, the real horror in horror stories took the form of aliens from outer space or terrifying swamp monsters. Today’s teens face horrors that are closer to home: guns, alcohol abuse, eating disorders, bullies. Winner of the Aurora and Bram Stoker Awards, Edo van Belkom has gathered tales about modern-day terrors from some of North America’s best horror writers. This new spine-chilling collection includes stories by Michael J. Aruda, Randy D. Ashburn, Loren L. Barrett, Edo van Belkom, Mark A. Garland, Ed Greenwood, Tanya Huff, Michael Kelly, David Nickle, Tim Piccirilli, Edmund Plante, Michael Rowe, Robert J. Sawyer, and Sheri White.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-These 14 stories deal with individual trauma, not the type of horror most young adults think of when they see the word. The foreword explains that people are now more frightened by "personal fears-the fears we hold closest to our hearts, and the fears that cut us straight to the bone," but often teens skip that section. As with most anthologies, this one is uneven. One of the selections deals with two teens buying cigarettes for the first time. The elderly man they see in the convenience store ends up being the smoking spectre of death, and the story ends up being far too didactic. This seems to be an issue with several of the stories; the preachiness comes through too loud and clear. Some selections, while not true horror stories, do strike a chord. Michael Rowe's "The Night Is Yours Alone," while occasionally trite, presents a poignant story of a young gay man struggling with bullies and the strength he finds in a spirit from the past. Overall, this sequel to Be Afraid (Tundra, 2000) is an additional purchase for large collections.

Review

“These short stories are imaginatively written, and will make even an adult’s heart beat faster at points. Edo van Belkom has won Bram Stoker and Aurora awards for his own horror stories, and he’s put the expertise to good use in choosing this batch.”
The Calgary Herald

“14 stories guaranteed to produce goosebumps on the skin of the most jaded teen…Gut-jolting stuff.”
The St. Catharines Standard
