This review is from: Be Yourself: Tribute to Graham Nash's Songs for (Audio CD)
How touching to see 'Be Yourself - A Tribute to Graham Nash's SONGS FOR BEGINNERS' come from the heart of alternative folk-rock. This often surprisingly contemporary take on 'Willie's' classic recording remains true to the spirit of the original. Vetiver's slightly updated version of 'I Used to Be a King' serves as a fine tip of the hat, and Robin Pecknold's interpretation of 'Be Yourself' contains echoes of CSN. It's a toss up between these two which one is the best cut on this CD. Reminiscences of both CSN and the Hollies tinge some of the arrangements; at one point I imagined Allan Clarke singing with his old friend or Stills' guitar in there somewhere. Features the lovely Nile Nash, who admits she's no professional but grows more confident as 'Wounded Bird' goes along. Nice to have though understandably patchier than the original, as alternative music can be hit or miss. Even nicer to see today's folk-rockers so keen on music written by one of the greatest rock and roll musicians ever to have been taken for granted.
