Editorial Reviews

Legendary singer-songwriter Graham Nash s
emotionally charged solo debut Songs for
Beginners was first released in 1971. The album
was a hit, climbing to #15 on the Billboard chart
and introducing the now-classic songs Military
Madness, Simple Man, Used To Be A King, and
the Top 40 single Chicago. Now, flash forward to
2010: Nile Nash & Britt Govea of (((folkYEAH!)))
have assembled an all-star line-up of contemporary
music leaders to honor and celebrate Nash s first
solo LP. The artists put a unique spin on each song,
making them their own while honoring the timeless
vibe of the original recordings. A few selections from
Graham s classic second solo release Wild Tales have
also been recorded: Jonathan Rice handles On
The Line, Tyson Vogel (Two Gallants) takes Hey
You (Looking At The Moon) to another place, and
Jonathan Wilson (Chris Robinson s Wooden Family,
Jenny Lewis, Elvis Costello) recreates the now-classic
jam And So It Goes (Music Gets You High) with an
all-star Laurel Canyon line-

How touching to see 'Be Yourself - A Tribute to Graham Nash's SONGS FOR BEGINNERS' come from the heart of alternative folk-rock. This often surprisingly contemporary take on 'Willie's' classic recording remains true to the spirit of the original. Vetiver's slightly updated version of 'I Used to Be a King' serves as a fine tip of the hat, and Robin Pecknold's interpretation of 'Be Yourself' contains echoes of CSN. It's a toss up between these two which one is the best cut on this CD. Reminiscences of both CSN and the Hollies tinge some of the arrangements; at one point I imagined Allan Clarke singing with his old friend or Stills' guitar in there somewhere. Features the lovely Nile Nash, who admits she's no professional but grows more confident as 'Wounded Bird' goes along. Nice to have though understandably patchier than the original, as alternative music can be hit or miss. Even nicer to see today's folk-rockers so keen on music written by one of the greatest rock and roll musicians ever to have been taken for granted.
