4.0 out of 5 stars Crumbling Plantation house dripping with vines, ghosts.....
I went looking for what Barbara Michaels has to offer: I wanted a modern "gothic" romance. I wanted a a creepy old house on a vast old Virginia plantation, dripping with creeper and ivy, with crumbling foundations and spooky attics. Something like an adult Nancy Drew. (I beg your pardon!) Ms Michaels always manages to set the perfect stage; regardless that the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped -- a disappointment
I have read many of Barbara Michaels' books and enjoyed most. This book, however, lacked the suspense and excitement that most of her other books have. This book was quite a disappointment. After reading the blurb on the back of the book, I expected there might be a ghostly element to this story. There was absolutely no ghostly element at all. If a good Barbara Michaels...

(REAL NAME)
I went looking for what Barbara Michaels has to offer: I wanted a modern "gothic" romance. I wanted a a creepy old house on a vast old Virginia plantation, dripping with creeper and ivy, with crumbling foundations and spooky attics. Something like an adult Nancy Drew. (I beg your pardon!) Ms Michaels always manages to set the perfect stage; regardless that the story flows excellent, the dialogues are excellent, too excellent. Ok, yeah, she misses the last star because the story wasn't the best---but atmosphere, my dear, is everything! I'll bet is was a joy to write this story and what a joy it was to read it. If you are looking for a book that has a little of everything....suspense, mystery, romance, etc. This is it. Graveyards, archaeology, family secrets....read on! Don't forget to check out her other stuff to! All in the same sort of line. The "feminist" heroine, the Mr. Rochester-type hero, the spooky background...ahhhh, the spooky background....

5.0 out of 5 stars Barbara Michaels writes another intriguing book., July 25, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Be Buried in the Rain (Paperback)
This book doesn't just smack you in the face with realizations. It let's the answers come to you slowly. The characters seep into your subconcious. As a writer Barbara Michaels has surpassed herself again and again. I highly recommend all of her books. Also check out her books she's writes as Elizabeth Peters. They are well worth the read

5.0 out of 5 stars Michaels at her best!, September 1, 2001
This is my favorite Michaels' book. The creepy old house, the mystery surrounding the old woman and her maliciousness, the ruined love affair rekindled, and the archaeological dig combine to make a great story. A reader who reviewed this book was disappointed that the ending was left up in the air; it was the perfect ending in my opinion - it literally sent chills down my spine!

I cannot put her books down! I finish one and order 3 more. Her finess at suspense with a touch of supernatural is God given. May she never stop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming from beginning to end., March 10, 1999

Has all the best elements of a good ghost story with enough modern skepticism to keep us enthralled. Michaels is master of the modern gothic.

4.0 out of 5 stars A "haunting" gothic read for rainy days..., April 1, 2009
While this novel did lack a clear ending (it's more of a "lady or the tiger" sort of thing), this novel will probably end up as one of my favorites by Barbara Michaels. I will admit that some of the reviews here put me off of reading it, but I finally gave it a try & finished it within the span of a day.

Set in Virginia, the story follows a young med student named Julie as she is forced to go back and care for her ailing grandmother- a woman who made her early years a living hell on earth. As her frustrations with her grandmother rise, a new stress is added to the mix as an old flame (who may or may not have used her in the past) is given permission to form an archeological dig on the grounds of her grandmother's land. In the background of all of this tension there's the mystery of a set of bones that were found in the middle of the road, bones that appear to be of a young woman and her baby...

Now one thing I do have to stress is that this wasn't a ghost story. There are some supernatural elements (especially the little hint at the end), but overall the story has more of a gothic feel at times. All of the characters are flawed, which I really liked. The ending has to be my favorite, with the implications that could arise from certain objects that appear to have a mind of their own. Fans of gothic storytelling will like this tale, others probably will be bored.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delicious read..., June 21, 2000
By A Customer
An enjoyable book, suspenseful, ghostly, some romance, all the things that make a book "delicious"... musty libraries, ancient family cemeteries, good-looking archeologists. I couldn't put it down, I even read it during meals.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Summer Classic, July 4, 2010
Every summer, I reread Be Buried in the Rain by Barbara Peters. I can feel the heat of a Virginia summer as I read. It has a lovely mixture of history, suspense, romance, and a little paranormal thrown in for seasoning ... a decaying family plantation, a toxic, bedridden grandmother, a medical student enlisted against her will for a summer of tending, an old love affair fanned throughout, great secondary characters, including a hound called Elvis, all beginning with the discovery of the old skeletons of a mother and baby in the first scene.

And then there's that thick summer heat, a character itself. And I hate summer heat! Maybe I like this book so much because I strive to make the setting of each book I write an important character in the story, like the canvas on which the story is painted.

I'm over halfway through Buried, again, and I'm lovin' it, again!

This review is from: Be Buried in the Rain (Paperback)
This is another book in the series of great suspense books
by Barbara Michaels. She mixes suspense with a little
bit of romance, without going overboard. The plot keeps
you interested and you are on the edge of your seat through
the entire book. Overall, it's another great one by her!
