Book Description

March 26, 2002
In this stunning book, photographer Roberto Schezen and leading architectural writer Michael Webb offer a unique tour of 22 important American beach houses, from rustic cottages to striking modern architectural masterpieces. Illustrated with 120 original four-colour photographs, Beach Houses offers an intimate look inside these remarkable homes, as well as a fascinating discussion of how and why each one was built. It is a book as rich and diverse as coastal architecture itself, encompassing homes from Richard Neutra's starkly elegant structure in Santa Monica, to a serene, Japanese inspired house outside Seattle, to a fantastical Florida mansion designed almost entirely by its eccentric owner. The perfect gift book, Beach Houses will be treasured by aficionados of architecture and photography, as well as by those who simply appreciate the many joys of seaside living.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The term beach house usually brings to mind a humble wooden cottage on the shore. However, prolific architecture author Webb (e.g., Architects House Themselves) and architecture photographer Schezen focus on the grand homes that line the U.S. coast, from Florida to the Pacific Northwest. In beautiful color photographs, they show primarily late 20th-century architect-designed homes that take advantage of their beach setting and "respond to the nature and the spirit of the place." Included are explanations of how the architects and the designers have incorporated their clients' wishes into the design of each house. Well suited for professional, academic, and large interior design collections.
