Anna, Kate and Georgiana have been bosom buddies since their salad days at University of California at Santa Cruz: This novel follows the three adventurous women into middle age. Read about the author, Lisa Lutz

Book Description

On the Crystal Coast of North Carolina, in the small town of Emerald Isle...

Juli Cooke, hard-working and getting nowhere fast, marries a dying man, Ben Bradshaw, for a financial settlement, not expecting he will set her on a journey of hope and love. The journey brings her to Luke Winters, a local art dealer, but Luke resents the woman who married his sick friend and warns her not to hurt Ben--and he's watching to make sure she doesn't. Until Ben dies and the stakes change.

Framed by the timelessness of the Atlantic Ocean and the brilliant blue of the beach sky, Juli struggles against her past, the opposition of Ben's and Luke's families, and even the living reminder of her marriage--to build a future with hope and perhaps to find the love of her life--if she can survive the danger from her past.

No author can even come close to capturing the awe-inspiring essence of the North Carolina coast like Greene. Her debut novel seamlessly combines hope, love and faith, like the female equivalent of Nicholas Sparks. ...you'll hear the gulls overhead and the waves crashing onto shore.

Juli's lessons on different kinds of love and what unexpected blessings you can receive is a great, uplifting story despite some of the other sadder aspects of the tale.  This book is very well written, pulling you in and never letting go.
English Rose - Clean Romance Reviews  (8/4/11)

Credit goes to Ms. Greene for creating a vivid backdrop to this story. I truly felt like I was right there and could hear the ocean waves crashing against the shoreline... Beach Rental is a very good contemporary drama, with likable characters, awesome scenery descriptions and great tone of voice.

From the Author

If you enjoy BEACH RENTAL, I hope you'll give KINCAID'S HOPE a try!

Beth Kincaid left her hot temper and unhappy childhood behind and created a life in the city free from untidy emotionalism, but even a tidy life has danger, especially when it falls apart.

In the midst of her personal disasters, Beth is called back to her hometown of Preston, a small town in southwestern Virginia, to settle her guardian's estate. There, she runs smack into the mess she'd left behind a decade earlier: her alcoholic father, the long-ago sweetheart, Michael, and the poor opinion of almost everyone in town. As she sorts through her guardian's possessions, Beth discovers that the woman who saved her and raised her had secrets, and the truths revealed begin to chip away at her self-imposed control.

Michael is warmly attentive and Stephen, her ex-fiancé, follows her to Preston to win her back, but it is the man she doesn't know who could forever end Beth's chance to build a better, truer life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Debut Novel August 6, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Juli Cooke works hard at two dead-end jobs, yet she's getting nowhere. Then, a chance meeting with a dying man opens an opportunity to change that. Can she afford the risk?

Juli spent her life shuttling from one foster home to another, so she has low expectations, but when she meets Ben Bradshaw at a fancy party where she works as a server for the caterer, things change. Ben is ill and asks her to drive him home, then offers to pay for a cab to take her to her apartment. The following day she's at her day job, checking at a grocery store, when Ben invites her to lunch and has a proposition: marry him, and he'll settle a sum of money to help her financially when he's gone.

Ben, c the co-owner of a couple of art galleries with his cousin Luke, has terminal pancreatic cancer. He wants companionship with someone who won't grieve for him while he's still alive and who won't be emotionally invested in him when he dies. He considers himself a good judge of character, and he likes what he sees in Juli. Wary, Juli considers the offer, and finally decides that Ben is a kind man and she can make both their lives better by accepting his generous offer. What she doesn't count on is the love that follows. She's not in love with Ben, but she grows to love the wonderful person that he is, even though Ben's family consider her a golddigger. Especially Luke Winters, his cousin, who warns her off hurting his best friend.

When Ben dies, everything changes. Can Juli cope with her new-found status, with the resentment of Luke and Ben's family, and with her past?

I loved Beach Rental. Long after I finished this superbly written story, the characters remained in my mind. Ms. Greene's debut novel is stunning in both depth of content and characterization.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carolina by the Sea July 22, 2011
By Bettie
Format:Paperback
The North Carolina coast is the perfect backdrop for this story. This is not your typical romance, it's really about life's journey and the unexpected twists and turns we take along the way with a lovely love story. I liked Juli right off and worried, wept and hoped for and with her the whole way. Thanks for the perfect summer read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story as lovely as the cover. July 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This cover is absolutely gorgeous and the story inside is even better. I'm a native of Virginia so I've spent lots of summers and off-seasons on the banks of North Carolina and this author does a wonderful job sharing the gifts of the beautiful area.

Grace Greene has a wonderful way of stringing the right words together to sweep you away like the tide and make you feel like you're right there with Juli and Ben. You'll smell the salt in the air, feel the spray on your face, and swear you just heard the sound of a distant gull. A beautifully written story, perfect for your vacation escape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading! October 1, 2011
Format:Paperback
When I first heard about this novel, I figured it would be a case of a young woman and an old man where the family later contests the will. Well, Juli is a young woman and Ben's family does disapprove of their relationship, but that's about where my expections are left in the dust.

Juli and Ben meet by accident at a party - Ben is a guest, Juli is one of the waitstaff. That Ben is immediately taken with Juli and within days proposes a business-like arrangement that includes marriage should be hokey and contrived. Ms. Greene, however, pulls off this plot seamlessly. Ben's motivation is so believable the reader never questions the oddity of the arrangement. Nor the strangeness of Ben and Juli's relationship.

Ms. Greene is masterful with her characters, bringing the reader into their lives and making us feel their emotions - even the not-so-nice ones. I felt Juli's pain, her heartache, insecurities, anticipation and excitement. I understood Luke's conflicting emotions, wanting to be happy for Ben yet not trusting Juli. The relationship between Juli and Luke develops naturally with no contrivences.

Overall, this is a story of relationships and love on all levels, not just romance but also friendship, respect and the sense of acceptance love brings. The only criticism I can make about this book is that the suspenseful ending is a bit predictable, but that detracts in no way from the enjoyment of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read, Predictable January 7, 2013
By Dete48
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really struggled with the rating on this book, as well as a previous one from the same author. They are well written, and the characters are well drawn, but the outcomes are very predictable. There is no explicit sex, nor profanity, and that is a big plus in my opinion. All in all an enjoyable read.

Right from the get go I was intrigued by this book. A marriage based on a business arrangement? Interesting!

Juli is a great female lead character as she's very strong and very independent. That may seem weird considering that she married for money, but don't let that fool you - she knew exactly what she was doing and what she was doing it for; to provide a better life for herself.

Ben is a sweet male lead, something I very, very much appreciated. He doesn't try to push himself on Juli, but he very much feels compelled to want to be with her, to provide a better life for her.

Ben's family are the quintessential overprotective busybodies who want to chase away the supposed gold digger. But as I said above, Juli doesn't scare easily.

You can guess where the story is going, but it takes a few unique turns that I enjoyed. There is some suspense in the form of a former coworker of Juli's kind of stalking her, but it's pretty tame.

I definitely recommend this book if you have an afternoon free with no kids, no husband, nothing to do but read 'til your heart is content curled up on the couch.

This was a good book. It was kind of an emotional roller coaster. You know how it's going to end about 3/4 of the way in and it ends rather quickly. Good summer read.
