Intoxica! & companion book Grog Log,
By Derek K. Johnson (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beachbum Berry's Intoxica! (Spiral-bound)
These two volumes will make you never want to order a high priced, poorly mixed, tropical drink from the bar again!! I highly recommend these books to anyone who wants to have a cocktail from an era when making a drink was an art form. Why I say, "Buy both of these books!!" -1. Vintage tropical drinks from the 1930's to 1970's featuring Don the Beachcomber.

This is volume two, and just as good. The only other "tiki" drink books worth buying were printed in the 40s and 50s, and this update is better. You have the current ingredients. Any drink enthusiast needs to have the recipes of the masters on hand.-Swanky Organizer of Hukilau - the East coast annual tiki event. ...

Just when my "grog log" was beginning to fall apart in curacao-stained tatters, the Beachbum comes out with the new edition. Intoxica is even BETTER than the first. Timeless recipes and unending fun await. For anyone who wishes to delve into the world of exotic drinks, this is the BEST book that I've come across. In no time at all you will be mixing the most amazing and tasty concoctions in your own kitchen. You will never order a tropical drink at a bar again. Get This Book!

Fantastic book, just like his first one (Grog Log). Spiral bound to lie flat while you are mixing. Tasty drinks, what more could you want? We have enjoyed "Blood of the Kapu Tiki", "Surf Room Mai Tai" and more. The only downside to Beachbum Berry's books is that you will never want to order a cocktail in a bar again, because you will only want drinks that are as good as the ones in his books.
THANK YOU BEACHBUM BERRY!

Beachbum Berry started with The Grog Log and, amazingly, just kept going. He is the undisputed world's expert on Tiki drinks. If you are a diehard fan of Tiki or a cocktail aficionado you should just buy all of Beachbum's books. If you are a beginner, start with Remix and work your way backwards.
You can find all of his books here: http://www.slgcomic.com/search.asp?keyword=intoxica&search.x=0&search.y=0

I have to admit that I had second thoughts after hitting the place order button for this book based solely on price. I had never paid so much for a book before. When it arrived, I poured over the pages and made my Bev Mo list. Coincidentally, my husband and I were headed out for our anniversary that very night and were going to a tiki bar in Alameda, CA - Forbidden Island. [...] We went and had drinks and so many of the drinks were in this book! I was so excited that I kept telling my husband this one is in there, that one is in there... As I've now made a few drinks from the book, I can guarantee to you, if you like tropical drinks, you NEED this book. it's fabulous! Now, I'm so glad I spent the money. Totally worth while.

Wonderfully researched classic cocktails, those brilliant concoctions of an era when exotica, tiki exotica, ruled. The retro-tiki crowd has caught onto these books, and more importantly, caught onto these very well crafted drinks.
The downside is that after making drinks from Beachbum Berry's books, you'll be sadly let down in any bar ordering a Mai Tai, or a Zombie. Unless the bartender has this book. |
