Book Description

November 15, 2005
Journalist, storyteller, and ragtime piano player Harry Foster is back. From a mugging in a Vietnamese opium den to hopping a freight train down the Malay Peninsula to a waterfront bar in Singapore to a sing-song theater in China, Foster never fails to show the squalid side of life in a glorious adventure to the wild countries of Southeast Asia during the Roaring 20s.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A beachcomber in the Orient,
This guy travels Borneo, Siam, French Indo-China, Japan, the Malay States, and the Phillipines in the early 20s. And not one dull page in all 395 of 'em.. It was simply wonderful reading, with not a few laughs. He travels on freight cars among pigs, walks through the jungle, and meets the most fascinating people and goes to the most interesting places. It was all great! One caveat, however. This did take place in the late teens and early 20s, and Foster's prejudice for other races clearly shows through. Unfortunately, he was not atypical of his times, and the book must be read with that in mind. Thank god times have changed.
