If you thrive on the craft of pop music, that rare knack for creating 3-minute gems that own your head and snapping fingers, then you must have Matt Duncan's "Beacon" EP, if only to become the envy of all your friends who have never heard of him.

The 2nd product of Lexington KY's Hop Hop Records (whose other treat, Idiot Glee, also deserves your ear) it's hard to exactly peg Duncan's sonic charm, but throwing a rock that hits Elvis Costello's early records -- or Joe Jackson's -- wouldn't be a bad shot. Nor would comparison's to Darryl Hall, in the Voices or Private Eyes era.

Utterly solid, this record isn't the latest DIY I-recorded-all-the-parts-in-my-bedroom-until-I-got-tired-of-it project of the moment. No, these are little treasures, expertly recorded and conceived, fully fleshed-out, full instrumentation, harmony vocals, all that and a bag of chips. It's like Duncan was a 70's AM radio star in another dimension.

The simple fact is that these delightful tunes could -- and should -- own the radio in a perfect world. Failing that world, they can at least own your stereo for the summer.

Man, this EP is rock solid awesome form start to finish. It recalls all sorts of great 70's and early 80's punk and pop and punk power pop but it sounds indubitably new, unmistakably modern and fresh. And yet i can't think of anything else that I've listened to in the last two years that sounds anything like this. The horn and vocal arrangements are brilliant, the use of body percussion and poly rhythms a stroke of genius, the unabashed hookyness is, well, hooky. We can't stop listening.
