Editorial Reviews

On September 25, 2012, internationally renowned guitar superstar Joe Bonamassa will release the highly anticipated JOE BONAMASSA: BEACON THEATRE LIVE FROM NEW YORK on CD, showcasing the stunning sold-out two-night performance at New York City s legendary Beacon Theatre. Special guests include vocal powerhouse Beth Hart, legendary singer/songwriter John Hiatt and classic rock star Paul Rodgers. Produced by Kevin Cave Man Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Black Country Communion), the 2 CD package captures the magnetism and might Bonamassa showcases as a performer. The 2 CD set is the complimentary audio package to the Beacon DVD, which released earlier this year and debuted at #3 on the Top DVD Music Videos chart!

JOE BONAMASSA: BEACON THEATRE LIVE FROM NEW YORK rips through 20 songs spanning Bonamassa s career with smoky vocals complementing the guitar wizardry and rapid-fingered ease with which his fans know and love. Alongside the great chemistry he shares with his formidable bandmates Carmine Rojas (bass), Tal Bergman (drums) and Rick Melick (keyboards), the performance is mesmerizing to watch. He kicks it off with Slow Train, from 2011's solo album Dust Bowl and rolls through a number of fan-favorites including: Cradle Song, Dust Bowl, When The Fire Hits The Sea, Bird On A Wire, Blue & Evil, Mountain Time, and many more. Hart joins Bonamassa on stage for soulful duets on I'll Take Care of You and Sinner's Prayer, which is featured on the recently released Don't Explain an album of soul covers Hart recorded with Bonamassa. Hiatt, a Nashville Music Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and American Music Award (AMA) winner, joined Bonamassa for a rendition of Down Around My Place and I Know A Place. And as legendary classic rock singer Paul Rodgers (Bad Company, Free) came on stage, the crowd jumped to its feet as he and Bonamassa performed Free's Fire And Water and Walk In My Shadows.

Blues guitar maestro & prolific singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa has released his third album so far in 2012 ('Live Over Europe' as part of the rock supergroup Black Country Communion (BCC) & his solo 'Driving Towards The Daylight'), a live blues double CD titled 'Beacon Theatre : Live From New York'. The double CD (20 tracks), is a wonderful blues album (covers his solo career up to his betseller CD 'Dust Bowl', incredible guitar work from the blues guitar maestro as one would expect and much more & his great collaborations with featured artists in rock lead vocalist Paul Rogers, Beth Hart & legendary country singer-songwriter John Hiatt in this live album). Overall production and sound quality is good for a live recording. It's a great compliment to the DVD of the same title/name released earlier in the year.

Disc 1 (11 tracks) : stand-outs/gems/solid tracks include "Slow Train" (incredibly beautiful guitar work & vocals), "When The Fire Hits The Sea" (wonderful melody, guitar/piano combination & vocals), "Midnight Blues", "Dust Bowl" & "The River". Great tracks include the opening track "72nd St. Subway Blues" (great guitar solo), "Cradle Rock" (late Irish singer-songwriter Rory Gallegher's composition) , "I'll Take Care Of You" (slow-tempo track, great duet featuring Beth Hart), "You Better Watch Yourself" & "Steat Your Heart Away" (up-tempo track). Okay track is "Sinner's Prayer" (featuring Beth Hart on vocals). This is my favourite CD of the two.

Disc 2 (9 tracks) : stand-outs/gems/solid tracks include the opening track "Bird On A Wire" (mellow, slow-tempo beautiful track), "Mountain Time" (incredible guitar work & piano), "If Heartaches Were Nickels" (another slow tempo mellow track with a wonderful melody, vocals & drums/piano combination).

I've listened to this many times since my initial purchase and it never gets old, I purchased the Blue-ray of this show as well. The vinyl is warm and beautiful whereas the blue-ray is very crisp and gives you more of an emersion effect. I find myself listening to the vinyl far more than the Blue-ray because of its warm feel.

Next up on Joe Bonamassa’s catalog is Beacon Theatre - Live from New York. While Bonamassa’s live albums had been stellar up to this point, this one raised the bar yet again. To date it is unique among his recorded concerts. It has more cover songs and guest appearances than any other does, and every one of them hits the mark. My favorite song of the show is Bonamassa’s masterful rendition of Gary Moore’s “Midnight Blues”. If you have read my reviews of his previous albums, this will not be a big surprise to you. For me, this song belongs in the conversation with “Reconsider Baby”, “So Many Roads”, and “Stop!”, and I had the pleasure of hearing him perform it live back in April. His tone on his solos is amazing, and it showcases his slower technique rather than his blistering speed (see “Woke Up Dreaming” from Live at the Royal Albert Hall for comparison).

While “Midnight Blues” is the highlight, there are plenty of other standout moments. Beth Hart joins him for two songs from their collaboration Don’t Explain, and both of them are spot on. While I was not impressed with John Hiatt’s studio appearance on Dust Bowl, his two tracks (“Down Around My Place” and “I Know A Place”) show that he and Bonamassa can have good blues chemistry. However, Bonamassa would probably place the two songs that Paul Rodgers joins him for as his favorite moments. I wouldn’t argue with “Walk In My Shadows” and “Fire And Water” as strong to quite strong.

The rest of the material will be familiar to Bonamassa fans, and he delivers the goods across the board. One other noteworthy item is that this is Tal Bergman’s (drums) first publicly available recording with Bonamassa. His style brings different nuances to the songs from that of regular drummer Anton Fig. That is not a knock on Fig, but it is just another unique aspect of the Beacon Theatre concert. This is another must have for all Bonamassa fans.

Overall: A+

I'm giving 3 stars because the DVD and show are great, of which I also own. but the CD however seems to be flat in comparison. So the great DVD averaged with the poor sound quality of the CD gives it only a 3 in my book.

Overall very flat sound on a high quality home system.

Quite a let down :(

This is Joe's THIRD live CD in the last 10 years. While I enjoyed the DVD...this CD does not seem to have the same sound quality. The instruments sound muddled and really the only new material that has not been released before are the tracks featuring special guests. If you have the DVD already great...if not perhaps you should get the DVD instead because this CD is just not up to par.

All I can say is WOW! Joe Bonamassa truly becomes one with his guitar ! He combines the FINEST blues, rock and guitar playing I have ever heard. The beginnings, middle and endings of all of his performances are original and fantastic. Some of the most creative musicianship you will ever see and hear. His versatility and showmanship is 2nd to none.

The review on this live DOUBLE-CD from Joe Bonamassa performed at the Beacon Theatre in New York needs to be rated and described on numerous plateaus to benefit any future customers considering making a purchase. Based on earlier previous reviews there are a few more dissatisfied reviewers than normal on one of Joe's CD's... and this time the complaints aren't just about wanting more electric blues included... it mainly centers around the recorded sound quality. I will address my feelings on that in a moment.

First of all there are two CD's totaling ONE-HUNDRED-NINETEEN-MINUTES-OF-MUSIC and that's certainly a tremendous bargain, especially at $12.79. One of Joe's talents that I believe gets overlooked... or not fully appreciated because of the massive guitar talent he possesses... is the fact that Joe has such a strong, booming, beautiful voice and it is evident here on innumerable cuts. The guest singers include Beth Hart, John Hiatt and Paul Rodgers. It's kind of interesting seeing human nature take place in the prior reviews as some people really love one of the guest artist' performance... and go so far as to say another guest artist doesn't add much. And I tend to agree... but I pin those declarations in a different sequence than others have. And to me... that reinforces how wise Abraham Lincoln was when he said: "YOU CAN PLEASE SOME OF THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME... AND YOU CAN PLEASE ALL THE PEOPLE SOME OF THE TIME... BUT YOU CAN'T PLEASE ALL OF THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME."

So to me... I thought Beth Hart tore the place down... I thought John Hiatt derailed the momentum.

Now to the discussion of the quality of the sound recording. I feel it is definitely not as bad as some have said... and not as good... as others have said.
