Enjoyable amateur sleuth mystery, August 3, 2009
This review is from: Bead on Trouble, A Kitzi Camden Mystery (Audio CD)
The reader changed her voice from character to character. A couple of the voices were a bit annoying (especially the teenage daughter of Kitzy's friend) and did not seem to match the character, but all in all, the voice changes helped make each character clear.
The characters were multi-dimensional and the story was engaging. I caught myself looking forward to the drive home, and sitting in the driveway a few extra minutes in the evening to hear a bit more. Through the first person narrative, I felt as though Kitzy was telling me the story and her reason for wanting to solve the murder was believable (to clear her best friend and save her friend anguish - I'd do anything for my best friend!). It was a bit distracting to learn that Kitzy was a former Texas senator - it really didn't add much to the story, except for a few tidbits here and there, though I suspect the author was laying the groundwork for future stories. As a scrapbooker, I was also taken in my the setting of a bead camp and references to the craft. It caught my attention enough that I purchased a starter set to learn on my own!
When I finished, I eagerly looked up the author to find out about the next book in the series. Unfortunately, I learned that the author had been killed (trying to save a stray dog from being hit, which instantly endeared her to me). I will definitely check out her other books, but was disappointed that the series will not continue.
(note: it appears that the author started book 2, and someone has completed it on her behalf)
